Basically, I believe that the best anime allow for you to immerse fully into it. To imagine a lot and be guaranteed to enjoy what you see. However, there are plenty that you find unwatchable... except for that one tiny speck that gave you hope.

I consider Rio! Rainbow Gate to be a godawful anime, with no redeeming value. I mean, it WAS made for late night TV, and it was based off of Tecmo's Blackjack pachinko games (Rio appearing in two Dead or Alive Extreme games), but all it needed was actual tentacle rape (they got very close in Episode 10) and it would've been a hentai series.

But... the one bright spot was Cartia Goltschmidt, the series villain who finally appeared at the end of Episode 5. Other than their penchant for constantly messing with the size of her breasts, she was a bright spot as a very interesting villain, who was a former dealer that probably turned sinister after dealing with so many turkeys and wanted it all. Unfortunately, there are quite a few moments where Cartia's existance is brought into question (not "Why is Cartia alive?" but "What is the point of her being here?") with motives and other characters either revealing they never believed her (Rina Carmine-Goltschmidt telling Howard that she only listened to Cartia to get into the position of revenge and was doing all this for herself) or were simply using her (the Casino Guild using her knowledge of Gate Cards and then abandoning her after they were foiled). And this is supposed to be the main villain.

I originally had this mindset with Gundam 00, with Nena Trinity being the lone reason for watching it (they actually gave her a reality check and she started to resemble a competent character, but the writers took it all away just so Louise could kill her without impunity), but as I saw it more, I got to understand the point more and more. Of course, I still feel like the show achieves major botchery in scriptwriting, and still feel like they screwed up Nena royal at the end by giving her death to a character that never really deserved that feeling of satisfaction.

If I'm only "tolerating" a show it usually means it's time to drop it, personally, and focus on other things. Unless there's more than one reason (or that one reason is "I want to know what happens"or "It's a movie/short OVA I might as well just finish it") then I probably wouldn't continue to watch it.

I think I only tolerated K-ON because it was about girls. Could you imagine it with boys? o.o

I'll tolerate anime that are high in popularity, making me interested enough to start them, but turn out to be less-than-good in my opinion. It's hit or miss really. Some shows live up to the hype, some don't and some take time to pick up. No matter what though, I'll see each of them to the end to get a full experience.

In general, any anime I start (more than 2-3 episodes in), I finish no matter how they turn out. Watching "cutting-edge" anime blind each season has been an interesting experience so far. I've only begun this recently.

Much like yoshiyukiblade, I try my best to tolerate a show if it's very popular (eg Sword Art Online). Popularity makes me curious to see if it actually lives up to the hype.

If it's not keeping me interested and is not popular, then I have no reason to continue watching it.

While one character alone isn't enough to keep me watching something, an entire supporting cast of interesting characters can make up for a less than thrilling lead. The best example for me is Gundam Wing. For the majority of the series, I cannot stand the characters who I would say are the leads: Heero, Relena, and Zechs. However, I really enjoy the majority of the supporting cast, in particular Quatre who is one of my favourite anime characters of all time. If it wasn't for a great supporting cast though, I have a feeling I would not have made it through that show, especially since it isn't exactly my favourite genre to begin with.

I wasn't really a fan of Heroman, but I watched it for the girls. I enjoy that slutty-American-girls stereotype in anime. I even got the Lina figure despite not liking the show very much.

Yes. And to tell the truth, I'm not entirely averse to the idea! Wink

I can't think of a time when this happened to me with anime. If getting through a show feels like work, I stop watching. However, I agree with other posters that I am more likely to stick with a show I don't really like if it's popular. A show that is popular will often be accompanied by the phrase, "Don't worry; it gets better later," so I end up trapped xD In these cases, I'll usually finish it if it's one cour, but any longer and I'll probably quit at some point.

I'm less picky with manga than I am with anime. I really liked some of the earlier arcs, but I'm pretty sure the only reason I'm still sticking with Black Butler's manga at this point is Sebastian. Hey, that's actually a good example--I only sat through all of the second season of the BB anime because it was BB and I really wanted to like it. I have regretted it ever since.

The only time I tolarate an anime is when I want to see if it gets better towards the end of it. but if it pure total fanservice crap like Kanonkon( I think that was the name of it) then it's gone. Kanonkon was the first series I ever dropped.

Persona 4 because it's funny without being a comedy. It's the worst best series or best worst series I've ever seen.

The action is tedious, the drama is boring, the slice of life aspect is ... well, guess, the character relations are unrelatable and I can't tell if the series is using the term "audience surrogate" ironically or not; It's all over the premise {not to mention in the title} but the characters take it as a given, from entering a TV world with zero curiosity to watching the "midnight channel" where they all show up on without wondering the right "why".

Why haven't I dropped it? It's amusingly entertaining or at least entertaining in how much the show wants to amuse. It's 20 minutes a week and I watch them as they're taken off, no cost to me.

Some shows that I only watched for the girls or the ecchi come to mind. Queen's Blade, for example, there's almost nothing else to it but hot girls. The animation is lame, there's zero plot, characters aren't interesting. But you have giant toads licking girls and exploding boobs. I was in for the rest of the season after that.

Although, it wasn't enough to get pass the second season.

I also watched "Training with Hinako" for the lolz and I think that was the worst (non-hentai) animated thing I've just seen for a pair of tits.

---
Romantic comedies are another genre I can barely tolerate. I remember watching the totality of Amagami SS Seasons 1&2 because I liked the art-style and the cute voices. Other aspects of the show were so average I've found it to be very boring.

Bleach, seriously i've dropped this show like 3 times. It's not because it's a long series but the fact that they had cut off the main story with these sub stories to keep it running longer. I found that irritating. It's still an awesome show and the only reason I tolerate it is to finally see the cataclysmic grande battle between Ichigo and Aizen...(pauses)...damn. I need to rewatch this one.

This.....hm....I don't know if there are any...if an anime has more things I dislike than like, I normally just drop it....
I need to think carefully about this...

AHAHAHA

DO WANT. Anime hyper

You are lucky. I wish I had dropped it...>_> far too late into the show.

[Edit]

Yeah, I could honestly say one reason I tolerate bad/mediocre anime is visuals. I'll watch something very boring or poorly written if it's "so pretty". Like the X movie. Anime hyper And I watched it dubbed.. So THAT is saying something.

I think it's a case by case situation. Things like SAO and Accel World, I tolerated them because they were really popular (though in the end I did drop AW, it was just too much stupid for me). I also went through all of School Days, even if I consider it the anime I've hated the most. Ever.

Then there are others that have a single plot element that interest me, like Campione, the mixture of mythologies was interesting and the animation was fantastic so I did my best to cope with all the absurd harem hijinks. In the end I dropped it too though. I did finish watching 11 eyes because I like superpower stories and the thing with the Seven Sins was kind of interesting but in the end I hated it all because it made no sense.

I will be really tolerant towards a show if there's a substantial amount of good looking guys (see: reverse-harem) I still can't believe I survived through the whole of Amnesia and I mostly regret it (except for the part in which I reckon the guys were really handsome, especially Ukyo). I also did my best to hold on to Arcana Famiglia, but I was bored out of my mind by episode 8, and the guys weren't that handsome so I dropped it.

If I own the show on DVD or someone lent it to me I will usually watch it to completion, no matter how much I hate it (Shining Tears and Dragon Crisis, for instance).

I'll also do my best to finish an anime if someone recommended it to me, like I did with the original Ai no Kusabi OVA, which was recommended by a friend who shares my love for yaoi. I kept waiting for a satisfying romantic ending but it never came, and I've come to question what that girl meant when she said it was "kind of funny". I had also originally dropped Guilty Crown because it was ridiculous and nonsensical but my brother insisted otherwise so I finished it. My opinion didn't change, but at leastspoiler[ Gai looked pretty handsome all the way til the end]. On the other hand, he also recommended I picked back up Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere, another one I dropped because it was too confusing and didn't make any sense, but I ended up liking it a lot and even watching the second season.

I suppose that's about it. I rarely drop series because I'm a completionist, so I will usually tolerate a lot of things (see: spoiler[caging and drugging your girlfriend and making it look like it's romantic] in Amnesia) but if I get too busy in the middle of a particular season (usually Fall or Spring, since they air at the same time as my finals), I may drop a show or two that are not entertaining enough.
