ok so im looking for some help on how to follow this series. I've looked it up on wikipedia, this site and im just confused on its order. So i just watched .hack//sign and i enjoyed it up until i finished it and have no idea what happened or where to find it. [spoiler[/spoiler]So i hit the end and i see sora turn into some monster and look like he went into a coma and then everything ended.] So i tried looking up where the next part of the story is and i cant figure it out and i keep reading stuff thats semi ruining other stories for myself. Can someone help me and tell me what order everything is supposed to be watched in?

According to ANN's encyclopedia, this is the order of the Anime series:
.Hack//Liminality (OAV) .Hack//SIGN (TV) (prequel) .Hack//GIFT (OAV) .Hack//Intermezzo (OAV) (sequel) .Hack//Unison (OAV) (sequel) .Hack//Legend Of The Twilight (TV) (sequel) .Hack//Roots (TV) .Hack//G.U. Trilogy (movie) (sequel) .Hack//XXXX (manga) .Hack//GIFT looks to be like a joke episode so you probably don't have to worry about watching that after SIGN. Intermezzo is a sequel to SIGN, followed by Unison. Then it looks like Legend of the Twilight is sequel to SIGN. I think Roots is just a spin off of the series so you can probably watch it any time. G.U. you might want to watch after Roots as I believe it continues off from Roots TV series. And then there is the manga. Hope this helps.

ok this does sorta help but the thing is, where i watched the sign series it had the intermezzo and unison episodes listed right after them so i watched sign, thought it was supposed to end at 26 and then it got confusing with the spoiler i had wrote. So since they were there i watched intermezzo and unison hoping they would be the next part and explain but it just seemed like there was a 2 year gap between the series and those episodes and spoiler[sora was normal and dancing and stuff, not a monster or in a coma like i last saw him] I suppose i can try the legend of the twilight and see if that connects the dots. If anyone reading this actually has seen the whole .hack series and understands the problem, please fill me in

I haven't finished watching SIGN yet so I had to disregard your spoiler post.
If the OAV's haven't cleared any of your confusion up then perhaps Legend of the Twilight might considering its a sequel to SIGN. I don't know though as I need to finish watching the series. I was just going by the encyclopedia. |

Let's see... it's been a long time since I've seen SIGN, but from what I remember. spoiler[Skeith kinda swallowed Sora or something. Bear gets the super-hacker Helba to trap Skieth inside some abandoned area of The World and I think that's pretty much the end. The OVA (Unison) is just the SIGN characters and those from the game meeting up and dancing. I'm pretty sure Sora was there at the end, so that suggests that he was able to separate himself from Skeith somehow.]
But yeah, that probably doesn't help much. I think the most surprising thing was finding out spoiler[that Sora was just an elementary school student]. |

The problem is the next part of the story is not an anime or manga. The direct continuation of .hack/signs story is told in 4 PS2 games. They are .hack/Infection .hack/Mutation .hack/Outbreak and then .hack/Quarantine in that order. Unfortunately while the story in these games is pretty good and will give closure to signs story, the game play is quite repetitive and rather boring.

well i didn't read your spoilers because id like to see it for myself but now i kinda want to after reading the next post. Wait so theres no way for me to know what happened unless i play old ps2 games? There hasn't been any adaptation of these games into something i can watch or read?

Looking at the encyclopedia here it looks like the .Hack//XXXX manga may cover the events of the game, although looking at the Wikipedia entry for the manga it mentions that they changed some things so it isn't considered canon. I have not read it though so I can't give you a definitive answer on how accurate it is to the PS2 games. It looks like the only way to get the true continuation of the story is the games.

If that is true, that is the... lamest... thing... i have heard in a long time! They decided the best way to conclude their series was in the span of 4 video games on a system that past its prime like 5 years ago? I am speechless and absolutely dumbfounded. Honestly the spoiler i mentioned was the kind of part that literally gave me chills when i watched it and now i cant even find out what happened first hand?! UGH! Im gonna suggest to Rukiia, and i apologize if this lowers your enthusiasm towards watching it, but you may wanna stop because theres no way you wont be disappointed with the last 5 minutes

Why would I want to stop? I am a gamer so perhaps I might want to play the video games to find out what happens after the anime? Or maybe I just don't care about what happens and will watch it anyway? 
I'd rather be the judge myself over a series but thanks for the warning. |

Actually, the writers pretty much give that away before the "big scene". spoiler[Fairly early in the series (if I remember, at the end of the scene when they're waiting for Tsukasa and he teasingly threatens to hang out with her indefinitely) he tells Mimiru he has to leave abrubtly so as not to get in trouble for staying online too late, which narrows his age down to being young enough to be disciplined by parents for not going to bed, and explains alot about his behavior. Near the end, B.T. zings him with her correct suspicions about his age to remind us and prepare us for the reveal of how young he really is.] Only two lines or so of foreshadowing, but it's there. |

R-Sars, it's critically important to understand here that the .hack// anime titles were never intended to be stand-alones. This was the first fully-integrated multimedia franchise, in that multiple different elements had to be experienced to get the full story. One was expected from the beginning to watch the anime and play the PS2 games and read the manga/novels and play the card game version to get the full experience, and it was all designed that way from the beginning. Yes, that is annoying for those of us who only ever cared about the anime part, but it is supposed to get you interested in the other aspects of the franchise.

Ok i get that, and i play video games just about everyday and rpgs are my favorite type and i would have no problem playing the games. I play old, out of date rpgs all the time.. But thats all well and good at the time of its creation, but how about 10 years from now? Will you even be able to play most ps2 games anymore? PS even stopped making backwards compatible systems years ago and when the time comes how available are these games going to be? Probably not at all. So 10 years from now, how is anyone going to watch this series and finish the story?

It's called a "Multimedia series", the games are actually the core of the series, telling the biggest and most important parts of the .Hack world, the animes are just in support of them and give background on The World and some of its characters. Remember that the games came out at the same time as the anime, //sign is a very OLD anime.
I really enjoyed the .Hack games, and thought they were really fun at the time. Yes, the four original games are the follow-up to //Sign, where Skieth plays one of the major reoccurring "villains" of the piece, many of //Sign supporting characters make cameos, some become playable team mates, etc. Likewise, the //GU games are the sequel to the //Roots anime, or rather, //Roots is all about establishing the main character, and GU is about when his real adventure starts. They at least cover a lot of the bullet points of the game's story in the //GU Trilogy movie. If it's any consolation, each game typically only has 20 hours of gameplay to it, less if you blitz through it, and they used to cost less than most (and now are probably pretty cheap).
So what would you suggest, that they now, ten years later, go back and make an original anime covering the content of the four games, to make it easier to follow a ten year old anime for people that didn't watch it ten years ago when it came out? That seems like a waste of their time. Really I'd think it ore likely that they'd put out some sort of anniversary version of the game that included all four of them as a single bundle. |
