When watching anime which do you prefer? English dubbing or English subtitles with the original japanese dubbing? In some series i compared which sounded better. A series where i've done this was rurouni kenshin. In the english dubbing i found that saito sounded more sinister a heartless than his japanese counterpart. Also that kenshin sounded too much of a child in japanese dubbing.

O dear god. not another dub vs. sub debate. The dub haters will always be on the offensive, while the dub lovers stay on the defensive. Simply beacause for some insane reason even though both versions are available one way or another, the haters feel some life long ambition to condemn the constantly improving field of dubbin. If a show suffers from bad dubbing its the casts and studios fault, not the entire roster of English voice actors throughout the US.
Seriously I dont give a ____. If the dub is halfway decent, I will give it a chance, simply for the sake that I think facial emotions tell a story as much as dialogue. Unless the voice really strays away to a point of distraction then I will watch it subbed (or if a dub is not available). |

i feel the same i am tired of seeing new threads of dub vs sub since so many already exist. next time do a search and continue on one that has already been going on or even better just read it and keep it to yourself. frankly i dont give a damn either if its dubbed or subbed if its a good anime the language doesnt matter. hell I've also heard spanish and french dubs and in spanish dubs most of the characters sound the same and dont even get me started with the french dubs and i still like the damn shows.

I like subs.
But this topic has been done before. I know it was in good interest, but search through a few pages before posting.  Sub VS Dub is done before, and the conversation should still be going, so you cam red the opinions on there.

Overall, grand scheme of things, Subs are superior work, although there are certainly good reasons to prefer dubs.
Dub Pros: -If you are a poor reader, and cannot keep up with the subtitles -If you are a marginal reader, and cannot keep up with the subtitles AND pay attention to the visuals of the show at the same time -If you have an intrinsic dislike of things Japanese, and their language annoys your ear -If you cannot pick up emotions in dialog unless the speaker is speakng English -If you don't want to have to watch the screen while the show is on, such as if you want to be doing something else while you watch -If you're a visual purist who doesn't want anything cluttering the screen -If you're blind Sub Pros: -Even though dubs continually improve, few, if any dub casts are as strong, or as suited to the roles, as the Japanese cast -Roles are generally better acted, although the degree of this is varied from show to show -If you understand even the basics of Japanese (such as honorifics), you can pick up more of the nuances of the original dialog -The series is closer to its original roots, less altered -If you're and audio/acting purist who only accepts the best in voice acting That's all I can think of at the moment, but it boils don to this: for me, subs are, and for the forseeable future will be, the far superior option. For you? I can't say. It all depends. Plenty of people prefer dubs, and that's perfectly within their rights. People can prefer whatever they want. The only thing that bothers me i when people INSIST that dubs do not feature sub-par voice acting/casting when compared to the Japanese. This is simply not true, no matter which you PREFER. |

Although I usually go for the sub, there are some impressive dubs as well.
Fullmetal Alchemist for example has a far superior dub. Cowboy bebop as well has a great dub. |

I prefer dubs, but I occasionally watch subs. And if a DVD is only available with subtitles, that's not stopping me from buying it. If it's dub only, the reason I'm not buying it is because it's edited and/or the show is for kids.
But seriously, you should've done a search on this before posting. Sooner or later, some otaku purist will come in and preach about how dubs are the spawn of Satan or whatever nonsense.

I prefer the English dub version. The English version, when not 4kidsified, provides a superior experience that is closer to the original than the subtitled version.

personaly i dont care wether it is subed or dubbed
i absolutly hate the 4kids dubs ie dbz on ytv (in ontario) they totaly ruin the anime i also hate the dubbed intros and outros ie one piece on fox (buffalo(we get that here in toronto to)) |

I completely disagree. Aside from the horrible and inconsistent pronunciations from "Cow-rew" to "horo," the dub is one of my most unliked. Of course, this is due to the fact that Kenshin is also my favorite anime series (up to the end of Kyoto anyway). I've only read the first two volumes of the manga, but from reading the commentary of Watsuki-sensei, I feel I have a good understanding of what he had in mind for the characters he intended to create. Kenshin (pronounced Ken-sheen) is voiced by a woman because he looks like one, and that voice along with his appearance was intended to throw people off and sort of parody the fact that such a frail person can be so strong. In my opinion, Mayo Suzukaze's voice fits perfectly because she does a good job of voice variation between "serious" and "funny" Kenshin. Her voice is not too deep, but not too high at the same time, giving a good balance in the use of high and low tones. Granted, Richard Hayworth was probably the best choice from that particular group of VAs, given that some American listeners would be too close-minded to hear a woman play a male character. But if done extremely well, I'm sure Kenshin could've sounded MUCH better. My big beef with Hayworth is that he doesn't sound elegant enough. To me, Kenshin the rurouni is a gentle, caring, yet vigorous and determined gentleman. But given his character design, I feel casting a woman to play him was a nice change of pace in contrast to the typical male character that's played by (*gasp*) guys. I suppose you'd like someone like Jouji Nakata or Tomokazu Seki to play his Japanese voice instead? And while Sparky Thornton's Saitou is the only other role I'll slighty give any credit to whatsoever, I also disagree in your take on him being more sinister than Hirotaka Suzuoki. First of all, Saitou isn't supposed to be sinister. His service and dedication to the Shinsengumi and philosophy of Aku Soku Zan is obvious in proving that he's not some evil and sadistic guy as opposed to Shishio. While Thornton sounded decent for the role with his usual monotone and stoic style of voice acting, I feel it removed all of that arrogant and chaunvinistic tone from his personality, which is one of the characteristics I absolutley admire about him. All in all, this just my preference, and I'm not a dub hater at all. However, anyone who tries to bash one of my favorite lineups of seiyuu will be tenaciously debated with, especially with weak arguments like that. I'm not trying to change your mind or anything, I'm just trying to point out why I prefer the original cast to the (bad) English dub  .

I really don't care but it ticks me off how the elitist thing to do now a days is to say all dubs suck when that isn't true. There are really good voice actors dub, a lot of okay ones, and some horrible dubs.

Hehehe wow! Another classic sub vs dub debate! Heheh, okay okay I won't argue.
I myself love both sub and dub. Though I love sub a little bit more than dub, mainly because they do sound better. But hey, here are a few English dub studio ratings from me (IMO): Bang Zoom!/Animaze/New Generation Pictures: 5 star ******!!! Industrial Smoke & Mirrors/Monster Island (ADV): 3 star *** FUNimation: uh... well 2 star ** Ocean/Blue Water/Viz: 1 star * (really awful sometimes) So yup, my sub/dub balance is sub: 52% dub: 48% Both wonderful. |
