This thread is my request for suggestions from those who have seen anime that I haven't. I tried to put together a decent list of what I liked and disliked so you can get a decent picture of what I'm most likely to enjoy. Thanks-in-advance!

Some of the anime I've already enjoyed:

* = Not yet finished
¥ = Most Impressive

Akira ¥ (Pushed me over into anime fandom)
Chobits
Cosplay Complex
Cutey Honey
Cowboy Bebop *
Eat Man 98 *
El Hazard - Alternative World *
El Hazard - The Wanderers *
Galaxy Express 999 ¥ (The one that started it all for me)
Gatekeepers (original)
Golden Boy
Grave of the Fireflies ¥ (Words can't describe it)
Hand Maid May
Human Crossing *
Jubei-Chan ¥ (A careful blend excellent themes)
Jubei-Chan 2 *
Kiki's Delivery Service ¥ (Fun for the whole family)
Kite
Knights of Ramune
Labyrinth of Flames
Laputa - Castle in the Sky
Last Exile *
Lupin III - Castle of Cagliostro
Mao Chan *
Maburaho *
Maetel Legend
Maze
Memories ¥ (Truly unique, thought-provoking shorts)
Metropolis ¥ (Good story and truly excellent visuals)
Mezzo Forte
Millennium Actress ¥ (a lifetime of hope and longing)
Mohoromatic
Mohoromatic 2
My Neighbor Totoro ¥ (Family fun at its best)
My Neighbors the Yamadas
Nadesico (series) ¥ (Another excellent blend of themes)
Nadia (series)
Najica
Nausicaa ¥ (Great story and visuals)
Neo Tokyo ¥ (Another set of truly unique shorts)

Now & Then Here & There ¥ (Hard to watch but truly gripping)
Once Upon a Time
Paranoia Agent *
Perfect Blue
Photon ¥ (Pure bliss with an excellent ending to match)
Ping Pong Club ¥ (The most disgusting anime ever made?)
Please Teacher
Please Twins
Popotan
Porco Rosso
Princess Mononoke ¥ (Another Miyazaki masterpiece)
Roujin Z
Sakura Diaries
Samurai X
Shinesman
Slayers (original series)
Space Pirate Mito *
Spirited Away ¥ (My personal favorite among all anime)
Spriggan
Steel Angel Kurumi
Steel Angel Kurumi 2
Steamboy
Strange Love
Strawberry Eggs
Sugar
Super Gals *
Tales Trilogy
Tenchi Muyo
Trouble Chocolate
Utena: The Rose Bride (series) *
Vampire Hunter D
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Weather Report Girl
Wicked City ¥ (Wicked and dark, but not entirely heartless)
Wind Named Amnesia

Some anime I didn't care for:

Amazing Nurse Nanako (started)
Bubblegum Crises 2040
Demon City Shinjuku
Dragon Ball Z (brief try)
Excel Saga (started)
FLCL (brief try)
Galaxy Angel (started)
Gatekeepers 21 (started)
Gundam (brief try)
Lost Universe (started)
Nadesico (movie)
Sailor Moon (brief try)
Visions of Escaflowne (started)

I'm big on comedy series, but I also like dark titles. I hate lots of mindless shouting. I'm also not that big on mechs, but they're fine as long as they're not the entire story. I don't mind fanservice, but harem shows should be balanced and entertaining (like Tenchi Muyo).

I don't know if you will get locked because it's just a list and you give no reasons as to why you like or dislike these shows but I'll reply.

If you liked the Ninja Scroll Movie I suggest you try the TV series. The fighting and animation was better than the anime but the story was a little weird but in then end I thought it was good.

You said you like dark anime so maybe Berserk would be good. Sure the anime doesn't give you a proper conclusion to the series but if you don't mind that it's great.

Try Elfen Lied. I kinda thought of Chobits only with a whole lot of gore. Dark, Romantic, and funny at times made this anime one of my favorites.

Although campared a lot to Evangelion, RahXephon was really good in fact I like it more than Eva. I liked the story better and it even made me cry. Those who've seen it know about the saddest part in the anime that takes place in a hotel room.

Gungrave was dark as well but my favorite part was the Millenion story and I kinda lost interest after it was told because I have the game and the story is pretty much the same, except for the end. Gungrave had good action, great story, and it was just great all around.

Good luck and if this thread is around long enough I'll post more as they come up.

You liked Popotan and Mao-chan? But you didn't like Galaxy Angel? Sad I know you said you don't like mechs and I don't particularly like them either, but you should try Full Metal Panic. Its a really good balanced mix of action, comedy, drama, and romance. IMO, I think it's the best well rounded anime.

Welp, If you like Dark anime. Try Demon City: Shinjuku. It's just as dark as wicked city and with same type of graphics. Story is a city ruled over by demons and a girl must had in there to get her father(IIRC) and she has man protect her. But he alsos has his own agenda which deals with the ruler of Demon City. Basically, a very action, very dark, story, that if you liked Wicked City you'd probably end up liking this one. Dubbing is exetremely crappy and like I said animation is about same as Wicked City. It's also one of my personal favorites.

Thank you for your suggestions!

First of all, about this thread being locked... I hope not! Sometimes I break the rules just because I'm in that kind of mood, but not this time. I really just want some suggestions so that I can find another series to get into. I could go back and give some insight for why I liked each series and movie, but dang that will take some time.

As for the first set of suggestions, here are my comments...

- Ninja Scroll series (I've heard bad things, but maybe I'll give it a try)
- Berserk (I'll put it on my list)
- Elfen Lied (Chobits + gore? hmm)
- Rahxephon (I was going to start this soon!)
- Gungrave (I'll look into this)

Regarding questions about Popotan, Mao-chan and Galaxy Angel...

I enjoyed Popotan a lot. It was all over the place and really kept me guessing what was going to happen next. It was truly a unique experience IMO. Mao-chan caught me completely off-guard. A friend of mine rented it for his daughters and ended up handing it to me because the anime rental store was much closer to my house than his. I went ahead and popped the first volume in just to see what it was. I don't always get into uber-cute series like Mao-chan, but something about that series was incredibly humorous to me. Japan spending billions upon billions just to keep their faux magical girl defense force up and running just made me laugh to no end. They couldn't even bring a common house cat to submission but they still get to play with an entire nation's defense budget. Galaxy Angel is a blur to me, but IIRC there was too much shouting and the story was too fast-paced and wasn't making a lot of sense. I don't tend to like super-exuberant ultra-hyper shows that don't make sense. Well, there are a few shows like that in my list, but in the case of Galaxy Angel there wasn't enough there to keep me interested. If you really honestly think that I gave up on it too soon I might give it another try, but it's a bit unlikely.

Regarding "Demon City Shinjuku", I've already seen it. It wasn't really good enough to include in the enjoyed list or bad enough to include in the disliked list IMO. On the plus side, I did watch it all the way through in one sitting. Smile

Thanks for your suggestions and comments everyone.

I'm not too sure what you mean by future selections, but here's a list of titles to be released...sometime, as well as a few already on the market.

Blood the Last Vampire: Well, if you like blood or vampires or any of that, then give it a shot. There's an anime called Blood+ that's based on this if you find it to be your type of show.
A few more in this group: The aforementioned Elfen Lied, and Samurai X OAVs.

Hmm...let's see...When I think Chobits, I sort of think Strawberry Eggs. There's very little connection, really, but if you're looking for sort of a harem thing, here's one.
edit:It's about a male school teacher who disguises himself as a female to get a job at the male-hating all girl school nearby. I thought it was fairly well balanced with good plot development. It's not too big on fanservice, it's more of the jokes. (Comedy Genre)

Oh yeah, I just remembered: Najica. Guns shots, panty shots, and...other shots. So maybe if you liked Cowboy Bebop and Glden Boy...give it a look. Basically, the main character works in a perfume shop or something, and at night she goes on these missions. Okay, I just did a horrible job explaining it, but I saw that a long time ago.

A couple of good suggestions from the horror/psychological vain is Perfect Blue and Boogiepop Phantom. You can read ANN's review of Perfect Blue here and Boogiepop here. Both reviews are pretty much inline with my thoughts of both titles.

I second Boogiepop Phantom if you like the horror/psychological stuff. It's creepy, but not scary or anything. They just show you what happens when people decide to do drugs...

If you want another comedy suggestion, try Genshiken. It's a comedy about a school's anime club, and I was going to look into this myself.

BTW, have you checked out Fullmetal Alchemist? I would recommend that to anyone. It's got humor and the dark plot, since your looking for both, I give it a shot. I'll warn you that the beginning is quite slow, but it gets a lot better.

I updated the list of anime I've watched (in the opening post) because I was getting some suggestions that I'd already seen but simply hadn't listed. Regarding those that are new to me...

Blood the Last Vampire -- I'll check it out, thanks!
Blood+ -- I'll check it out as well, thanks again!
Boogiepop Phantom -- Was thinking about this, thanks for the reminder!
Genshiken -- Sounds amusing. I'll give it a shot. thanks!

Fullmetal Alchemist -- For some odd reason I'm naturally averse to things that show on CN. I have no logical reason for this. Maybe they just strike me as being too bland or mainstream? Then again, they're actually showing Eva and I really liked that. So, maybe I should give it a try.

Fullmetal Panic -- I saw the first episode (probably in NewType USA's DVD) and it seemed interesting. I'll add it to my list, thanks!

Thanks to everyone who posted and also to those who just racked their brain but couldn't come up with anything to post!

Edited to add... This is my 100th post... Whooohooo!
