Just wondering what is Bandai/Manga Entertainment's track record for releasing thinpack DVD bundles?

There are already 2 different editions of GiTS:Stand Alone Complex for each individual episode release, is it safe to assume that there will be no thinpack release?

Thinpacks, no. Boxsets/brick collections are another story.

In recent years, Bandai has released just about everything in box sets or bricks after the entire series has been released. While some may have come in thinpacks, most are bricks with a few box sets tossed in. At some point GitS will surely get a box set or brick release.

The only Manga Ent. 'box sets' I've seen are for Virus and the Eva movies.

Interesting... thanks for the info. Just to clarify, when you say boxset/brick, do you mean the original disks with original cases just bundled together either in plastic wrap/special box to sell under seperate UPC for the entire collection?

Bricks are (normally) a single dvd case that is has the width of about three dvd cases. Inside there are different divide to place each dvd. So answer your question you would not recieve the cases the dvds came with when they were originally released but you do get the original DVDs.
Now thinpack that different, you get those little itty bitty dvd cases for each dvd in the series, and most of times these dvd don't have the same special features as there original.
As for GITS:SAC I think that it will be quite sometime before we see a thinpack/brick set since dvd sales are still very good. But it is always possible. Hope that helps.
Till next time,

Delta Kiral

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and best wishes to everyone at ANN. A very big thanks to the staff, and all the very nice people on these boards. Happy New Year!

ADV removes extras from their thinpacks* but Geneon and Bandai, when it does them, keep all the extras. However, they won't have any inserts that came with the regular DVDs.

*Except their first three: Full Metal Panic, Rahxephon, and Noir.

Bandai also has released some one clamshell sets that are really affordable. Titles like Silent Mobius, Crest/Banner of the Stars, Big O I and II, and many others have been rereleased at a highly discounted price. Their 2 packs like Brain Powerd, and Outlaw Star and individual discs, like the Gundam DVDs have been rereleassed at half price. Their full box sets (I bought the Ryvius set earier this year) also are much cheaper than their initial release. Most other companies will hve a title or two for cheap (Blue Gender rerelease, Kenshin Economy boxes come to mind) but Bandai is consistantly affordable. On the other hand, you are lucky if you can get a Genneon box set for under $150.

There is a thinpack boxset of Stand Alone Complex 1st Gig already available; unfortunately (depending on where you live), it's in the UK.
An absolute steal at its price, even if it only has the first disk from the regular editions (so no DTS audio).

In the Bandai corner...

Please Twins had a full box set release with the soundtrack CD and almost everything else, priced at just a little bit over what I paid for Vol. 1 + box + Cd Twisted Evil Evil or Very Mad , and Please Teacher had a brick release last year too. Wolf's Rain was also resold in a different box, but still with all inserts and soundtrack (no toy though). But no, it doesn't seem like Bandai is in the thinpak game, not yet anyway.

Edit: Box sets are generally understood to have all DVDs in original cases with the original artbox (the one that's usually released with volume 1 of a series). Sometimes the box is different, as with Wolf's Rain, and super-special items, like toys/T-shirts, are not included. The content of the DVDs is unchanged. Another example is the Comic Party set, which was exactly the same as the original release, except that the artbox didn't come with the special transparent slipcover.

"Bricks" are cases like the Steel Angel Kurumi Collection, the Berserk Collection, or the 1st 2 seasons of Sailor Moon (uncut), where all the discs are in 1 large case, without the liner notes, inserts, or cover art that came with the original release. The contents of the DVDs remain the same.

"Thinpaks" are the new phenomenon of small series boxes with half-size DVD cases. With many ADV series, the thinpaks have fewer discs than the original, and none of the disc extras that came with the original release. No liner notes, inserts, or other extras. Geneon has taken to releasing some thinpaks, like for Chobits and Mahoromatic, but those seem to have as many discs as the original versions: I would assume that the disc content is unchanged. So far, I haven't seen thinpaks from any other company.

Let me ask you, again I'm still a bit confused.

Box sets are different from bricks as Deltakiral has described them correct? Box sets are basically same disks/packaging as original (most of the time) bi-monthly releases but with a special box to hold them all?

Yeah, that's basically it. The box sets are just the individual releases (with their original packaging) collected together in one package, whereas the the bricks are just the discs collected into a special case. If you have episodes of a TV show on DVD (such as 24 or West Wing) they often come in bricks that open like a book where you open up the case and each disc is on a separate plastic "page" of the book.
