Saw this comercial on E! last night. Thought it was pretty amazing that they would acknowledge something that is often debated in otaku circles.

I saw this commecrial this past thursday
and sent an email to ANN about it. They were airing it at late night on TBS. Cool commercial, I liked the absolute man: Steve McQueen. Though I might have gone with Clint. |

For this sort of ad, it's easier to deal with an estate than a living actor. Clint Eastwood probably wouldn't want to be seen as a spokesperson for vodka in a country where some people still get uppity about advertising hard liquor. But, with clips of a long-dead actor, you know in the back of your head that he had no say in the matter and it's more a matter of the estate controlling his image liking getting large envelopes full of money from spirits conglomerates, so it can't really be seen as an endorsement if you like the actor but don't approve of vodka advertising. I know all of the major actors in Office Space are still alive, but, in that case, while they probably received some sort of compensation, it's not really viewed as an endorsement because the emphasis in that clip isn't on the actors but on the copier and computer getting smashed. |

Nah, they don't even need the actor's permission. Just the rights holders of the movie. Unless there's a contract signed otherwise, the people who own the footage can sell it as they see fit. Lead actors who received shares of the movie's profit are likely to get their share of the revenue from this. But salaried actors won't see a cent. I doubt Mcqueen's estate will see a cent given the typical contractual terms for movies of that era. -t |

Or not. The idea was to use the anime that was the most widely recognized or generally reguarded as the "original anime" by some people. Akira is by no means the best, or the original, anime out there (I would have probobly picked Haibane Renmei), but it has the image of the "ultimate classic." |

I was wondering when this would show up on ANN. I would have reported it myself when i saw it somewhere inbetween a few days to a week ago, but i wasn't sure how exactly. That commercial is so awesome, I was like "Wow that's so cool!!!" outloud, though no one else was awake in my house, lol.
I agree, other then the Haibane Renmei part. I would have used Eva, Ghost in the Shell, or Akira. I think Akira was probably best for the commercial though. Anyways, mad props for Absolut for the commercial. |

You're right, considering the 21 and up crowd probably used it as a gateway movie. Ghost in the Shell is also a good choice because of its kick-ass nature. I mean, I personally can't watch the 2nd Gig OP without getting incredibly pumped. |
