for hardcore funny, Excel Saga is your best bet, but if you're looking for hardcore funny with somewhat of a story, get Magical District Abenobashi.

Excel Saga is just too annoying to watch. Try Cromartie High, FLCL, Urotsukidoji, or just stick to American cartoons like Invader Zim.

If you liked Azumanga Daioh and Trigun (both of which I love, BTW!) then you should like Cromartie High, I think. Incredibly random, but incredibly hilarious.

I would have to add in FMP! Fummofu?... The idea is so obsurd, yet it's hilarious... a man who knows only the life of a soldier has to watch over a chick in a school, so he pretends to be a student in the school. He and the chick like each other but due to the way he was brought up, he's unable to admit it to her. Just hilarious in everything he does and his paranoias and the way he tries to protect her... a must watch funny anime.

(HOwever, i think School Rumble is the funniest anime I've seen so far.)

AH! My Goddess is pretty darn funny. Not even close to being as dirty with the jokes as mahoromatic, nor even showing anything like that series....but the humor is pretty great, and the story is excellent (not trying to bash Mahoromatic, btw, I just finished watching both seasons and the special and LOVED it).

As someone else suggested: Excel Saga....you're going to have to take that one in small chunks, as it will have you rolling pretty hard pretty fast, and if you marathon it you'll be desensitized to a major extent.

Guu is also another funny series that you need to pace yourself with...totally whacked out, and hilarious.

Midori no Hibi is another funny series with an excellent plot (very original as well)

I'll also mention Puni Puni Poemy....but with a warning: this is parody of Magical Girl anime at it's highest....it's not striving to be intelligent....it's just striving to make fun of just about every single element of stereotypical magical girl anime that you can imagine. THis is even more whacked than Excel.

I'd also suggest Girls Bravo--it's a couple of guys, lots of hot girls, lots of comedy...its main value is as comedy, not as romance or other story significance.

Well FLCL is defiantly one of the funniest animes I’ve ever seen, due to the fact that its so short it doesn’t have the boringness of the other animes that go on and on and that have those episodes that just trail along with nothing but storyline in them.

I would also recommend Steel Angel Kurumi... is pretty funny at some points...

I def agree with Full Metal Panic, but you have to watch it in english its just 10x funnier that way. I watched both Japanese first and English takes it hands down.

Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan will be funny if you consider violence and lots of blood as a form of comedy.

Jungle wa Itsumo Hare nochi Guu doesn't really have a "plot", more of smaller subplots that carry the series along. The comedy is derived from seeing a 12 year old kid stressing over problems that normally adults would worry about.

PS: Full Metal Panic is a must.

Well, along the lines of Trigun, I'd suggest GetBackers. There's quite a few episodes done just for laughs, but there is some drama, too. It's also got some great fight scenes.

Seconding Abenobashi. Haven't finished it yet, but it is hilarious.

Excel Saga, is by far very funny. Azumanga Daioh is more of a slice of life show with some cute funny scenes. Full Metal Panic and Full Metal Panic Fumofuu is a must because both have thier hilarity. Those Who Hunt Elves is full of "turn off the brain" cheescake comedy.
