I am curious as to why anime has more male views than female and like the genre of anime that they do. I could use some output from both genders. Tell me why you like anime and what your favorite shows/movies are.
I love anime because i can just stop whatever im doing and forget about it. It clears my thoughts and im able to focus. In other words i like to escape reality and think outside the box, as in "what if" i were in his/her shoes in that situation. What would i do? I like action and a badass attitude! Some shows that i like are Samuria Champloo, Ghost in the Shell, and some of the Gundam series. |

Online I encounter more guys that like anime, but IRL I think I know more girls that like anime. It's at least an even amount.
As for what genres I like...I like both Shoujo and Shounen. It's really not so much genres that I like as much as I like stuff with what I feel is a deep plot with solid characters. Well, it doesn't always have to be 'deep', but it at least should be fun and different if it's not. Some of my favorites are Fullmetal Alchemist, Princess Tutu, Fruits Basket, and Azumanga Daioh. Soo....that's an action/adventure/fantasy Shounen title, a Magical Girl anime, shoujo romance with a hint of fantasy, and a highschool-based comedy originally intended for young men. Kinda all-over the place with me.

Hmm I like anime pretty much since I'm Japanese and naturally love the culture and language, not to mention it just inevitably found its way to me since my parents often took me to Japanese stores/bookstores where I was exposed to a lot of the stuff when I was little. I'm a guy and just like the style that it offers: lots of cool character/mech designs along with the cultural part of it. Also, the fight scenes are often well coordinated and have lots of technically intricate moves, which you don't find as much in other forms of media.
I like pretty much any anime that has a good or fun storyline, so I really enjoy them all nearly the same. I won't list any favorites, but I particularly enjoy action & slice-of-life over psychological ones. It's not that I can't understand them as well as other people; it's just that I can't find myself agreeing with them 90% of the time since I think like...well, a biology major. Philosophy is not my cup of tea. |

I'm a girl, hence the nickname "prettygirl"
On the Shoujo side, my favourite anime would be Fushigi Yuugi. I'm not too sure if it can be completely categorized as shoujo since there's quite a bit of fighting in that too. But I can't help feeling weak in the knees everytime Tamahome or Hotohori confess their love. Oh man, if only guys in real life were that sweet!!! Sigh... <3 As for why I love to watch anime, the plots to anime are so different from the regular stuff on tv. Seriously, I watch American tv but I can do without it. Anime, on the other hand, is able to really captivate me and it makes me want to keep watching. It has the power to make me think about it while I'm sitting in class with the boring professor talking in a monotone voice. It has the power to make me rush home after class to keep watching it. That is why I love anime. It's just so damn good! Last edited by prettygirl on Wed Mar 22, 2006 10:40 pm; edited 2 times in total |

It was animation that got me into anime. Hope that makes sense. So I really look forward to anime that has top notch artwork.
I have favorite genres, and romantic/comedy, action, historical/period pieces, are it. I really don't like psychobabble stuff, which made Lain difficult for me to keep watching. Thank God it had great art. As for the storytelling part of it all, I just hope it is not too infantile. I was going to say juvenile, but I admit I enjoy juvenile stuff sometimes. That and do not be overly predictable. |

I'm a guy and judging by my anime club which has only two women of the 12 regular members, I'd say there's a higher male fanbase. I watch anime for a number of reasons, mainly for the excellent storytelling elements and the fact I love animation in general. It's far more versitile than live action in terms of the stories you can tell, and the unique universes you can create. I will watch just about anything basicly, from soapy romantic comedies/dramas to violent horror as long as it's interesting in some way.

I would have to agree with Kruszer on that. Its the sense that its a different world and the story lines on most of these anime are most outstanding!

I'm also a female who reads and watches alot of shonen. For me, I guess it's mostly the adventure aspect rather than the action: I just love epic journeys and adventures into bizarre worlds. For that reason, shonen series that are more adventure-driven like One Piece or Hunter x Hunter become instant favorites for me. Of course, I also love action, particular some of the well-executed battles in Naruto or Rurouni Kenshin, especially when they involve a wee bit of strategy and surprise moves.
I also read/watch some shojo: I do like romance, but the fact that most shojo series involve the same settings and sorts of situations can make me easily lose interest in them. Still, I enjoy things like Fruits Basket and Azumanga Daioh (which actually isn't shojo, but oh well) as much as any other girl, as long as they keep things interesting. But Maison Ikkoku, a seinen romance, is nevertheless one of my favorite series ever. |

Hate to break it to ya, but Fushigi Yuugi is firmly in the shoujo category...the bevy of bishounen, the art style, Miaka's constant angsting, and the fact that it was drawn by Watase Yuu seal the deal. I've never really felt bound by society's rules about what an adult male "should" like. (Granted, I suffer the consequences for this, but...) Sailor Moon was the first series I owned, and I've watched numerous shoujo titles since then, like CardCaptor Sakura, Ayashi no Ceres, Full Moon, Pretear, Snow Fairy Sugar, and others. Sure, I can enjoy a fanservice fest like Girls Bravo or Sakura Diaries, and I also like male-oriented series like NGE, Elfen Lied, Love Hina, and Bleach...I like to get a good balance of everything, and shoujo series are great for serious, heartfelt romantic & emotional storylines (even if they're not aimed at my demographic), as well as the sugary sweet cuteness that I love so much. And regarding the fanbase, most people say that con attendance is split fairly evenly on gender lines, and female fandom is growing. In fact, I'm even going to sample some shounen-ai like Loveless just to see what the fuss is all about--understanding the fandom is a neverending task |

I found this survey on sexual identity and gender of manga readers. Why do girls who like BL think they're manly? I'm 100% feminine, and that happens to be my prefered genre. (Right after that, I would've said yuri. Maybe I'm not as girly as I think I am...

I think the question is almost identical to why do more males play video games then femals.
Because most anime/video games aren't appealing to females.\ (Most, but not all) women don't like graphic violence, etc. They like an interesting story with cute characters and humor. Which is why the (majority, not all) of women that play video games and watch anime, play Mario games and watch shonen anime. |

Assuming all girls don't like violent anime is like assuming all boys don't like romance anime. If you think girls don't like violent anime, you should try watching a shoujo anime like X/1999 sometime. While I might've been more inclined to agree with you that there are more male anime fans than female fans a few years ago, there have been an increasing amount of female anime fans in the U.S. The recent airings of Mew Mew Power and Magical Doremi as well as 4Kids' recent acquiring of Pretty Cure is an obivious indication that shoujo anime is starting to break into mainstream culture. Many of the most popular anime series are shoujo anime titles like Sailor Moon, Fushigi Yuugi, Ayashi no Ceres, Fruits Basket, numerous titles from Clamp, Escaflowne, Tokyo Mew Mew, and various others. Shounen-ai anime is also starting to become popular in the U.S. as well, with hit titles like Gravitation and Loveless being especially popular among girls.
A lot of shounen anime on TV today is also very gender ambigous in that they have a lot of mass appeal. Inuyasha, for example, may be an action-oriented shounen anime, but it also has a lot of appeal to girls with bishounens and romantic love triangles. Naruto also seems to have quite a few female fans, what with all the Sasuke fangirls that're out there and Rurouni Kenshin is also a popular anime series with girls, despite being shounen in nature. MTV even did a recent article on yaoi manga, which you can read here http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1525830/20060310/index.jhtml?headlines=true, which I think shows that there a lot more female anime and manga fans than one thinks. I think the thing is, is that most male fans are more vocal about their fandom than most female fans, or they at least seem to get more media attention, but in reality there are just as many female anime fans out there as there are males. Just take a look at this forum which has a very diverse amount of male and female posters. As for myself, I'm a male and I don't have any prefered genre of anime. I'll watch anything as long as the story and characters are appealing to me, and I like anime because of the unique style of the animation, the likeable characters, and the intruging storylines. |
