I've already read The Anime Encyclopedia's summaries/reviews for most of the titles in the set, but I'd like to hear some of your guys opinions if you've seen any of the titles in the set.
The set includes:
• Venus Wars
• Garzey's Wing
• Wild Cardz
• Darkside Blues
• Battle Skipper
• Strange Love
• NightWalker: Midnight Detective
• NightWalker: Eternal Darkness
• Demon City Shinjuku
• Silent Service
• The Complete Shamanic Princess
• Knights of Ramune
If anyone has seen any of these, has any strong feelings, and wants to rant on them a bit... yeeeah, that would be greeeat. |

Nice. One of my friends got the same deal.
Darkside Blues is one of my favorites. It isn't that popular, and not many people have even heard of it, but I love the style and animation.
Demon City Shinjuku is full of power and passion, if you like that sort of thing. (by the way, The same creator made Darkside Blues, Demon City Shinjuku, and Vampire Hunter D.)
Strange Love is a very very sleazy erotic comedy. I didn't watch all of it, because they totally over did it with the fan service, and I got tired of that.
Haven't watched the rest yet, but I will soon enough

The only one I've seen is Demon City. It is to Wicked City what Return of Jafar is to Disney's Alladin.

Venus Wars was the first anime I ever bought on DVD, it was probably my 3rd DVD I got out of my entire collection. It was in that group of Saturday morning anime that aired on Sci-Fi that really got me interested in the genre, aside from things like Transformers but some on those childhood cartoons I had no idea that they were anime until after the Sci-Fi channel aired more things like movies. Venus Wars was one of those animes that I really enjoyed and helped me to really get into anime.

No offense, but the only thing in there worth watching IMHO is Nightwalker, and even that kinda sucks. I think they just found the 12 worst titles they sold and bundled them together to get them to sell. Yech.

Some of these are on the worst anime list. Knights of Ramune is pretty bad. Lesbian sex as the key to magical powers, nude mecha driving etc.

Lesbian sex majik? Nude mecha driving? BAD? Knights of Ramune sounds like my finest entertainment value.

My thoughts exactly. It's a very Ho-hum collection of titles.
• Venus Wars - I actually fast forwarded through this one skipping the drama. The ending was unique, but not very well exicuted with the video taped background and animated overlay.
• Garzey's Wing - Perhaps one of my least favorite anime ever. This thing just boring. It's placed in the world of Dunbine way in the past, but it's an awful setup. It's sortof like a cross between Fushigi Yugi and a really bad fantasy movie. When in doubt always, always drop something heavy on your opponent.
• Wild Cardz - I passed on this one.
• Darkside Blues - I haven't seen it in years, can't remember anything about it.
• Battle Skipper - 3 part toy commercial. A Battle Skipper is a toy line made by Tomy that features these squat looking mecha that basicly run into each other until parts fall off, not unlike those Rummble Robots that were popular a year ago. Anyway, the story doesn't have that many saving graces, if any. It does have a few comical moments, but I still just can't get around the rape scene and how the girl came away from it like nothing ever happened after being saved by the new "teacher" at school. Anyway, it's like a train wreck, I knew it would be bad and never get better, but I still had to buy all 3 tapes.
• Strange Love - I've got that floating around here somewhere. My brother said it was absolutly awful so I never bothered watching it.
• NightWalker: Midnight Detective - Never cared to see this one.
• NightWalker: Eternal Darkness - Ditto
• Demon City Shinjuku - Just like Darkside Blues I haven't seen it in years so I can't really say.
• Silent Service - This one I heard was surprisingly good, but I could never convince myself to watch an anime about a sub.
• The Complete Shamanic Princess - Probably the best thing in the set. Sorta like a demonic magical girl series. Twisted, but not too bad, I could see myself watching it again. It's just average though.
• Knights of Ramune - Got half way through and turned it off. Meh.

Darkside Blues..... Uhhggg.....
The only redeming part of that movie is when Darkside ask the girl, "Were am I?"
To which the girl replies, "The Darkside of Tokyo"
"Then that is what I should be called, 'Darkside'", he replies.
When this happened, My friend Mike said "Good thing he didn't ask if there was a good place to stay around here."
"Then that is what I should be called, 'Motel 6'"

Man, wish I had known about it sooner. Might just shell out the cash anyway, even tho AX is right around the corner.
Venus Wars is one of the first anime movies I'd ever watched, and still brings back good memories. Okay, so it's not the greatest movie ever, but it's certainly better than most of the other dozen.
Silent Service is always highly lauded but rarely actually seen. It's probably an enjoyable show (but, like everyone else, I've never seen it.) I did enjoy the SS and SS2 computer games tho. :)
Naturally, if you enjoy fanservice, you'll like Wild Cardz, Battle Skipper, and Knights of Ramune.. but they're really lacking in ... well.. everything else.
And finally, there's Shamanic Princess which, IIRC, was the most expensive OVA produced at the time. It certainly shows in the intricate scene backgrounds and fluid movements of the characters. The story's kinda weak, but it's still better than most of those titles.
If you can find them separate, you'll probably get a better deal. The better 6 are worth ~$20 apiece.. but the other half-dozen aren't. :p

*sctratches head* What does this have to do with the topic? BTW, you do know there's a manga forum here right? It's just a few down from the General forum.

Well, I'm pretty partial to Darkside Blues for the sake of the character Darkside. He's pretty much the only worthwhile element, since everything else turns out to be a mish-mash of anti-coporate freedom fighters versus mega-conglomerate imperialists storyline.
Beyond the sequences where Darkside is doing his "seeing into the mind" thing, it's a pretty mediocre movie.
Demon City Shinjuku, well.... It's well animated and seems like a mix between Matsumoto's and Shirow's styles and philosophies. But it just seems lacking something somewhere. It can be good. It can be bad. Depends on who's watching it.
I happen to like them both.

Thanks for all of the input guys!
The set arrived this afternoon, and I've been slowly picky my way though it. So far I've watched the first episodes of Night Walker and Shamanic Princess, and skimmed through Strangle Love to look for naughty parts. (With regards to that last part, I'm grossly underwhelmed.)
Interestingly enough, all of the DVDs came security sealed and magnetized (WHY from an online store with no brick and mortar outlet?!?) except for one... Garzey's Wing.
And know what? Night Walker ain't half bad. Sort of like a cross between Kenshin and Hellsing.
An OLD cross of Kenshin and Hellsing, maybe.
But, I'm looking forward to more of it regardless.
