She's limited to T/PG-13/13+ rated manga, and tends to prefer shoujo. I don't remember exactly what she likes, but this should be close.
Her faves: Ultra Maniac, Tokyo Mew Mew/A la Mode, Zodiac P.I., Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne.

I'll read just about any age level, but I don't like yuri. A little in the series is okay, it's just not something I like to read/see much of. Shounen-ai or yaoi, on the other hand...
Some of my current favorites are Demon Diary, Rurouni Kenshin, Hana-Kimi, Bleach, D.N. Angel, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Red River.

Amazon.com is your friend. Rate some of the manga you like with high ratings, and give ones you dislike low ratings. They give you a list of suggested list of titles you might like.

(I've seen so many of these kinds of threads in the past few months, it's making my head hurt. We need a sticky in the manga forum for this. I know there's one in the anime forum.)

From titles you've shown here, I'd say she is a perfect reader of Ribon and Nakayoshi, particularly works by Wataru Yoshizumi and Arina Tanemura -- both are major contributors of Ribon for over a decade (two dacades for Yoshizumi). Before creating a new style with Paradise Kiss and returning to Shueisha with NANA, Ai Yazawa is also the key contributor of Ribon. Her Ribon-era titles are arguably the best ones you could find in this anthology: distinctive art style, unique storyline (I'm afraid that I don't know how to explain it clearly, but her stories seem to have less emphasis on campus lives, a common theme of most shoujo titles), and excellent camera angles to capture dramatic moments.

Unfortunately, not many titles by them have been licensed in North America (I saw almost all titles in your My Anime / Manga lists were licensed ones and assumed you live in NA), so I could only wish you luck then. Wink

That's a pretty broad spectrum. Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop Could you be more specific? Either that or I'd just recommend you start with popular Shonen Jump and Shoujo Beat titles.

Her younger sister's favorites are pretty easy to predict; it's her own favorites making me feel difficult to recommend new ones. Anime smile + sweatdrop

Anyway, we have a General Manga Questions thread now, so please post similar "gimme a list" posts in that thread.

I think you would both enjoy Full Moon o Sagashite. It's simple and sweet, just for teen/preteen girls, but with a heart wrenching storyline that still appeals to you, the older sister.

Your tastes are just like mine- all over the place! I think you would also enjoy Basara, a story with the same action and romance level as Red River.

Wolverine Princess - Thanks... I wasn't aware of that!
I'm sorry... I looked around some and saw similar threads being answered in here, so I assumed this was where they belonged. I'll be more careful in the future. Embarassed

dormcat - Thank you. I'll have her take a look at those titles.
Yes, stuck in the USA with little to no knowledge of Japanese. *sigh*
Yeah, I realized that as I was typing it up... It's mainly my sister I was looking for, so I don't mind at all if it's too hard to pick one out for me. I'm the type that'll read just about anything, and was mainly looking for suggestions in any similar genre. I do read and enjoy most of the non-sport Shonen Jump titles. ^-^
Thanks for pointing me to the correct place for these.

molloaggie - She has at least one of those, actually. She likes it pretty well, but for some reason doesn't seem as interested in it. She's 13 next month, so you've got the age group perfect. Very Happy
Heh, sorry about that. I'll check out Basara tomorrow... thanks for the suggestion! Full Moon is a bit too girly for my tastes, though. =)

Hmm. For your sister I suggest either Girl got game, which is about a girl and her father move to a new city and she has to go to a new school and she finds out that the school that she will be going to is famous for their cute school girl uniforms, but she soon finds out that her father sighned her up for the male basketball team for she can live his dream to become the greatest basketball player ever, but thing soon turn sour when on of her basketball teamates find out about her "Little Secret".
Or Fruit Basket, but if you need any ideas about a birthday present for her try signing her up for the Shojo Beat. It's a monthly all girl manga comic book, 300 or so pages of manga. You can subscribe at the Shojobeat.com.

And for you a manga would be InuYasha or um. oh. Neon Genesis Evangelion or Trigun, thats major action pact.

Hope I gave you some ideas.
If you can't find any good manga at stores just go to Barnsand noble.com and type in Manga and they will give you a whole list of different manga.

For your sister:

I'm going to second Full Moon wo Sagashite. It is among the best shoujo titles I have read and there really isn't anything objectionable in it, but it does deal with death. A girl has sarcoma (a type of cancer) in her throat and has one year to live. It will probably be okay, but you may want to glance through it yourself first. Just FYI, its by Arina Tanemura, the same person who wrote Kamikaze Kaito Jeane, but this one is more recent and the art is much better.

I also highly recommend Kodocha: Sana's Stage. Obtaining may be tough though as it is now out of print. Online stores will be your best bet. It is about a hyper-active school girl (5th or 6th grade, I believe) who is a star on a TV show called "Kodocha" It is full of both comedy and drama.

My last recommendation should be a given for anyone who likes shoujo: Fruits Basket. I don't recall anything objectionable in it (aside from some mildly implied shounen-ai) and it is one of the most popular shoujo series around for a good reason. A girl who just lost her mother discovers begins living with several guys of the Sohma and discovers the Sohma family secret: The family has been cursed and certain members of the family turn into animals when they are embraced by a member of the opposite sex.

For You:

If you liked Bleach and Rurouni Kenshin (two of my favorites), I highly recommend Flame of Recca, my favorite shounen manga. It can be a bit fan-servicey at times (contains some mild nudity) but its fairly rare.

You should also check out Yu Yu Hakusho. Most current shounen action manga are more or less based on the formula that this manga used. It's a classic shonen action manga and recommended for Bleach fans (and shounen action manga fans in general). And if you like shounen-ai, there are some guys that people LOVE to pair up in this series.

My favorite shoujo manga is Ceres: Celestial Legend. It is much darker than your typical shoujo manga and can be a rather violent at times. It also contains a few scenes of attempted rape. However, it has a great story and I highly recommend it.

Vampire Game is a good action/comedy hybrid. Vampire King Duzzle is reincarnated, but in the form of a catlike creature and becomes the pet of the descendant of the man who killed him, who is also supposed to be reincarnated and Duzzle intends to kill him. This also contains some shonen-ai in it. Normally I avoid yaoi/shonen-ai like the plague, but I can handle it in this series.

I would recommend Red River but it seems you have already discovered it.

Larrix - Girl Got Game sounds right up her alley. Thanks for the suggestion! She already collects Fruits Basket, so I'd say you've got her tastes pretty well figured out. Shoujo Beat has several OT titles in it, if I recall correctly, so she can't get it.
I read InuYasha... great series. I read a few Evangelion manga years ago, so it's probably time for me to give it another shot. I'll be sure to check out Trigun as well. Thanks!

HitokiriShadow - Love your username. She has all the ones you suggested, actually.
I've never heard of Flame of Recca, but it sounds like it must be good. I've got a few YYH and most of the current Vampire Game series out, so it looks like you've got us both pegged. Ceres is by the same artist as Fushigi Yuugi, right? I'll be sure to take a look.
Thank you!

Yes, Ceres: Celestial Legend is by Yuu Watase, the creator of Fushigi Yuugi. I consider Ceres to be her best work.

Hey "Shadows of the Past" I'm glad I gave you some pretty good idea's, sorry the shojo beat idea didn't work out, oh well it was a shot. I have one more idea for you and your sister.
For your sister:
Angelic layer:
In the future, the most popular game in the world is Angelic Layer. Contestants must raise and train their own 'Angels' (or fighting dolls) to compete in tournaments. Enter Misaki Suzuhara, sixth grade Angelic Layer prodigy. With her speed-type angel, Hikaru, many people think Misaki stands a chance at winning the championship. She'll have a lot of help along the way, but the road to victory will be not be an easy route, especially for someone as young as Misaki. It's rated A for all ages.

And for you:
Ragnarok:
By Myung-Jin Lee After 1000 years of peace, the wolf god Fenris Fenrir has been reborn. She seeks to find the reincarnation of Balder, the most beloved God, as the land of Midgard sinks further into anarchy. They are both key players in the coming of Ragnarok, the time when fate and free-will shall come into conflict as the very nature of the universe is forever redefined.

I'm not a big sports fan either, but I really enjoy Crimson Hero. I know you've been told to check Shoujo Beat titles, so I just wanted to suggest my favorite. Although volleyball is discussed a lot, you really won't notice it because of the story--it's so cute! Embarassed

If you like Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yugi and Ceres, I would suggest Absolute Boyfriend. That's really the only title I like by Watase, unfortunately.

Check out any other SB titles that aren't included in the magazine (Beaty is the Beast, etc.).
