There are a select number of people who find or prefer a shorter anime series than a longer one for various reasons. They say why shorter series are better. I presume people will know what I mean so I'll just cut down to it.
What is better about longer series? My take on this. One, longer series are proven to have their audience. Two, at times for an anime with 13 or 26 episodes I find that some have rushed endings or have lame endings. I think that's it for now. Maybe I'll think up of more. So what do other people think? |

You get to know about the charecters better and it turns out to be a really good story.

If the series is based off a manga, it covers more of the original story. Other than that, it doesn't really matter to me.
"Cowboy Bebop" and "Samurai Champloo" could've been longer but I'm not complaining. "Trigun" and "Kinnikuman Second Generations" could've been longer and I AM complaining because there's more to both stories than that. However, when it's an episodic series like "Dr. Slump" or "Detective Conan", so many could actually be too much. In the end (IMO), it's all a matter of knowing when. Hopefully "One Piece" will cover the entire story and hopefully "Detective Conan" will end before the manga (and I LOVE "Detective Conan", too). And that's pretty much what I think. Really i thought trigun would have been a little bit better if it was a bit shorter, but then again i didn't really enjoy the last episodes of trigun much.

Each have their benefits.
In a longer series you get lots more character development. The characters can have a greater chance coming to life, then with a shorter series. With time, the characters will start feeling real until you will be able to enjoy the story to its fullest. Because I always thought the one who can actually believe a story will enjoy it the most. Plus you get to sort of "live" with the characters from your fav series. Like in GTO, I actually felt I was a part of this world after so many episodes, which made the ending all the more downing for me. Its like I got separated from a real friend, about whom I knew alot about. This is the benefit of the longer series. But something goes wrong when you get to the point of the over use of the dreadful fillers! Wich brings me to my next point. Shorter series. There is almost no space there for filler (though it doesnt stop certain series) so the chance of the story quality to decrease is rather low. Shorter series tend to have more substance to them. In a short time, the author(s) needs to make you believe in his work, and the characters. It takes a lot more work to create a short series. So at times it can be more rewarding, as it concentrates more "heart" and "dedication". Though it will never feel as real as a longer series, which slowly but steadily burns its mark into you. Of course there are some short series that are great as they are now but would be even better if taken to the next step, which is another season or more episodes. I am talking about the almost cult anime Golden Boy. It would be so awesome to see more of Kintaro`s hijinks. |

To my mind there is no real debate. Series length should be proportional to story. I have seen some series that were too short for their story concept, and others that are too long. Personally I think a series can be damned either way.
I really hate a 13 episode series when I can say this could have been a 26 or higher episode count series. For no other reason then with a little work the story could have been made richer, and even better if that had been what they did. I also hate to see a 26+ episode series that could have been just as easily been done in 13 episodes. These series usually have alot of filler, or garbage that does not further character developement, storyline, or even do anything like enhance setting. In the end if you can do with skipping through half a series, because it has alot of numbness that is a shame. Personally I prefer 26 episodes. From my personal experience these series can be deeper, and be more complex then a 13 episode series, but do not go so long as to have to invest in garbage to pad episode count. Now if your thinking like DBZ, or Naruto kind of series length. Your compareing apples to oranges. Those series do not have a real storyline. They may have some character developement, and arcs within the series, but well the series could have gone on without those. I suppose a good example would be compareing The Stand by steven king to a episode of the amazeing spiderman. I would not say either is better then the other. What I will say is it is a fundamentally different approach. Either you like books or you like comics. Personally I prefer books. I like real depth, and a rich story with interconnecting peices that makes you think alot. Whereas others prefer spiderman every month its a new adventure, and the story may not go anywhere in particular. Both experiences have pluses, but in truth cannot be compared head to head. |

Usually I prefer shorter series, because series that drag on for 52+ episodes tend to be exhaustingly repetitive. Of course, there are also series that could always have used a bit more time to flesh out its characters and story arcs, but usually a 26-episode series is short and sweet.
It all depends on the plot, though. FLCL does in six episodes what most series can't do in 26+. |

I know I remember seeing another post like this one, but alas, I can't find it. It's kind of hard for me to understand the appeal of super-long series, but I think it's because fans fall in love with the characters and their situations...then they watch for a few dozen episodes and want to keep watching the characters "forever." To fully enjoy these series, you probably need to like fighting tournaments and other story tricks that can build an arc for 20-30 episodes.
I've made this clear on other threads, but long series really aren't my preference. One thing--a series being long doesn't protect it from having a lame ending. I've heard that the endings of Inuyasha and Ranma are not very conclusive, for instance. Let's not forget the infamous Meiji season of Rurouni Kenshin, which dragged tings out to 95 episodes and alienated viewers in the process. Granted, there are some short series that feel too short, but most have some sort of ending, especially if theyre not based on a long manga. And to echo PenguinTruth, I think that AIR packs more into 12 episodes than most do in 24-26 episodes. |

It really depends on the series of course. I have come across many series that were either too short or too long. To me, the keys for a long series not to drag are:
The filler episodes should have some type of importance to the flow of the story......either something in the past of the future. The characters need to be likable. I would not be interested in learning more about a character I already don't like. More than one recap episode every 26 episodes is far too many. The rest really depends on the series I am watching. |

I think you misunderstood those "select number of people". Nobody ever tried to generalize whether shorter or longer anime series is better and nobody ever will. There are as many 13 episode anime titles that are as great as 26 or 50+ episode anime titles. What those "select number of people" really meant was said in context of whatever short/long anime titles they were currently watching at the time.
Having said that, I (and anyone who has watched as many or more anime than I) can give you at least one example for every kind of generalization given. If anyone says something like "an anime with 13 or 26 episodes I find that some have rushed endings or have lame endings", I will say "Elfen Lied and Air TV". |

I agree with Enjeru and opaquescum, it depends on the story they are turning into anime that dictates whats better, a long series or a short series. Although since your asking for a more direct answer, I like longer series' better (not to long)- like a 26-30 epds series- I find I feel more involved with the characters.

With all that I forgot to answer the question =p What I like better about a longer series is that you are given the chance to get attached to the characters. Most of the time in a longer series you are given a better scope of the story and more detail.
I don't know about anyone else, but when a series is drawing near I get a little sad if it is a good series. So I guess with a longer series, I don't have to feel sad as fast. |

its different for each of the animes if its a good one people will want it longer if its not good people will want it to be short
1.some stories go too long and makes the watcher bored and quit watching 2.if the story is good and it ends too quickly the watchin may want more huh? got the idea yet? |

I would agree, it depends on how much actual story there is to tell. The longer the series, the more time you can develop characters but some 13 episode shows, or even 6 shot OAVs, out do their 26+ cousins in that respect. Longer or shorter doesn't make "better", it's if you can tell a story and make people care about the characters that's important...to me, anyway. |

Longer series has one specific benefit that short series don't.
Honestly, all of the techinical stuff like character development, endings etc.. can all be done just as easily done in a shorter series compared to a long series. The real benefit for a long series is giving the audience what they want. When you watch an enjoyable show, you wish that there was more of it. So, assuming quality stays the same, isn't having more better? Also, having a longer series allows for a higher potential. If all 13/13 episodes for a show were perfect, then if the show was instead 100 episodes, and all of them were perfect, the show would get more credibility and such. Of course, that's just ideally, and is rarely the case in real life. |
