I've just finished watching BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad and I enjoyed it way more than I expected when a friend suggested it to me. From the get go in the opening animation with the song "Hit In The USA" by the Beat Crusaders I fell in love with the series. The song was great (to me) and never found myself not listening to it more than less than once. The characters were all amazing and I found their personalities to be all believable. The music was some of the best i've heard in a long time from an anime. I simply loved every song in the series. The conflicts that the group faces were all enjoyable to watch and the animation for the actual playing of the instruments was top-notch. There were very few things I didn't like about the series. The thing I didn't like or thought the series could've done without was the involvement of Masuoka Hiromi. No offense her character wasn't bad I just thought they could've done some other stuff without her being in the series. That aside I also wanted them to show more of Koyuki and Maho. I loved how they're relationship started and how it developped over the series. Now that i've got my opinion out I anxiously await your replies and views of this series. Thanks in advance for all those who reply.

Well apparently the manga has a much further story than the anime. I wouldn't know, Tokyopop's taking their sweet old time releasing it. Yes, I enjoyed the anime a lot. I quickly became a Beat Crusaders fan. It's interesting to see how bands take their music seriously in other countries.

Beck is seriously one of my more favorite shows. I agree with you that Hiromi could've been taken out of the story with little to no consequence. Her presence there kind of made Koyuki look like an ass in my opinion since he was constantly swaying between Maho, and Izumi. Last we needed was another girl in the mix to complicate things. But thats teenage drama for ya so I'm not going to make a big fuss about it. I have 1 other complaint about the anime and thats that they made Ryuuske look too cool in my opinion. In the manga, he's a goofy 16 year old with impressive rock skills. He was human. In the anime, it was like he was larger than the rest of them. But these are minor glitches in what I think is a great show. The cast of characters, the voices, the humor, and above all, the music were all great and really made this thing stand out. I've already gone on a rant about how great I think the music was so I'll leave that part out.

I always feel as if I missed something with this show. I hear so many people raving about it, but honestly...it left me very cold. Koyuki was part of the reason. I just didn't like him. And the sudden addition of the bizarre Lucille plot seemed like an attempt at "intrigue" that to me really didn't make much sense and fell short.
The thing is, I want to like it. I really enjoyed Ryuusuke and Maho. I adored Taira, Saku, and even was highly amused at Chiba with his off the wall antics, even if I hated his songs (ugh, Typhoon 24). With all of that, though, I still had such a hard time with Koyuki to the point of not being able to fully like the show. Usually I can get past an irritating main character, but the focus was just so heavily on Koyuki that it was difficult for me to appreciate the other characters enough to pull up my opinion.
That being said, I am considering the manga to see if that helps me overcome the Koyuki-factor. I want to give the whole series a chance. And more than that, I find myself missing Maho. Which is rather an odd sensation. It seems my attachment to the show has grown since I finished it off, even though I found myself 'disliking' so much of it, and with that in mind, should it ever be licensed it would be likely that I'd purchase it (I deleted off my digisubs as I went).
Besides...it has one of my favorite fun opening themes and animations. My husband didn't even watch the show with me, but he still likes to crank "Hit in the USA" in the car.
As for the Hiromi part, I had honestly forgotten about it. Besides, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't she choose Saku anyway? Or am I remembering something that never even happened?

Your right Mylene. You see the two go off in the last couple of episodes without Koyuki. I see what you mean about Koyuki being a somewhat unlikeable character, but I think the reason why he was so lame was mostely because they were trying to make him relateable to the target audience.

I agree with outlaw wolf. I mean Koyuki is the character that can be most realistic. At the beginning of the series all he can do is.....pretty much nothing but sing when Maho hears him. After that he worked his ass off to become as good as he is portrayed in the series for the next 2 years I believe. Showing his development over the 2 years of him practising and practising to get better is what I liked about the show. It showed that he wasn't just some person who just picked up a guitar and was suddenly amazing. Thats the realistic part that I like about him. I doubt most people wouldn't have found it that amazing if Koyuki started out amazing just by picking up a guitar.

Oh, don't get me wrong. That part I do find realistic. It's just the rest of his personality that grates on me throughout the first part of the series. I appreciate that they don't have him be a guitar genius. I love that the show focuses on his hard work, and how his early attempts at songwriting are met with ridicule. I just don't like the kid's personality. I've known some socially inept people (myself included), and I just can't seem to find anything that makes the other aspects of Koyuki's personality seem even remotely realistic. Sure, he learns the guitar, but he doesn't seem to learn from life.

BECK is an amazing feel good / slice-of-life series. What really drives the anime is a f'in excellent soundtrack. It really captures the feel for what you expect to sound like, as well plenty of homages and references to western rock.
Two thumbs up from me, rated as "Excellent" but will jump to "Masterpiece" if they continue a second season and complete the story of what happens to BECK.

@patch: They won't.
@mylene: It's not that he's socially inept or a social outcast of any kind. He's got a few friends at the beginning of the show. It's just that he's bored. He's a bored 14 year old with no hobbies or talents at the beginning. I've found serious parallels with myself and Koyuki because I find myself relating to his boredom. How every day feels like molasses in January and nothing will ever change that.
Granted, Koyuki is kind wussy, but he does learn throughout the show. He becomes a more confident character who stands on his own. This is best shown right at the end when he tries to single handedly get Beck back together. And who do you think kept everything together during the American tour before Ryuuske came back? That and his attempts at Izumi, Maho, and Hiromi show that he grew to become a more confident, headstrong, if not a bit too cocky Koyuki. The Koyuki at the beginning of the series would never have considered trying anything with either of those girls.

The series was awesome. To bad its only fansubbed now one of the series I would definetly get the dvds for. It really makes one think about high school and for the first time in a long time I really believe the characters are teenagers.

I loved the anime and I haven't read the manga yet but I plan on doing that soon. The ending of the anime left me kinda empty y'know? I would've loved to learn more about Keith and Beck. Maho and Yukio. And what happens after the American tour. The manga goes on much farther doesn't it? Will they make another season of Beck?
