it sucks that this is only open to students (i assume), there are less than a handful of events like this each year and i think it would be an incredibly interesting thing to attend.

It doesn't look like it's only open to students. It looks like anyone can go on their website. (Unless, of course, you want credit...then you'd have to be enrolled.)
