My first thought when I saw the headline on the front page was something like: "Is Robin Thicke male or female?" I'm not sure that I'd heard the name mentioned before. Then I clicked on a different article's link to read something that seemed like it might be more interesting.

The "Blurred Lines" video has imagery that parallels women with lambs, the lyrics are basically talking about how he "really" knows what a woman is all about, the chorus sounds like a rapist's plea, and the entire thing is just thoroughly misogynistic and unpleasant. I say this as a straight male, mind you. It takes a lot to offend me, but that video did it moreso than 90% of the messed-up H-anime I've been exposed to. |

I get it, you need to cover everything remotely related to anime, manga, Japanese games, and Japan in general in order to be the go-to place for news. However, to be a reliable source, you need to be willing to step back and say to yourselves, "Does this qualify as news? Is this something that needs to be brought to the attention of anime fans everywhere? Is this an idea that we, as a company, should be condoning by giving exposure to?" Not everything needs to be reported on. Sometimes it's okay to let the other sites report offensive things while you sit back knowing that you are, indeed, taking the high road. "But what about the AKB48 fans?" I'm sure they have fansites to post this trash. To me, the only reason to post this article is for hits. "Yes," you say, "that's kind of the point." And I agree to a certain extent, what with ad revenue and so forth. However, with an article like this, you're telling any rape survivor that you care more about hits and cash than about your integrity as a news source. You might as well publish an article about a Japanese baby being born with anime eyes and cat ears next. "The internet's MOST TRUSTED anime news source," reads the tagline under your logo. Having a man with a song that promotes rape culture remaking the video with some idol group is NOT news. It is not an earth-shattering event a la 2011 tsunami or an important tidbit such as a convention write-up, a manga ending, or a beloved member of the anime industry dying. This is gossip. If I want gossip, I will go to other anime sites. What makes this different from other gossipy articles that I have simply rolled my eyes over and moved on is that this is a subject that actually does harm. This song is promoting the raping of women (specifically, though raping any gender is unacceptable, to put it lightly). It is remaking a video with topless women, beastiality and other horrible things (I have not subjected myself to it as it is not worthy of my time). Now you will have a wonderful forum full of mostly cismen defending this song. Defending it and making fun of those of us who aren't laughing - whether it be simply because we find the song disgusting, or because it presents a trigger from a previous traumatic experience. This is what you're using to represent your brand. This is the bumper sticker on your car, the patch on your jacket, the keychain for your keys, and the shirt you wear walking down the street. This is you not caring about posting harmful content if it benefits you. Shame on you and your all-and-out ignorance of rape culture and blatant inconsideration for rape victims. |

Yeah, Robin Thicke should be more sensitive to women's issues, like teen pop stars who croon "Hit Me Baby, One More Time", or authors who write rapey bondage stories.

Honey, "Baby One More Time" was not written by Britney. It was a song manufactured and fed to a 17 year-old who arguably had no idea what she was singing about. She is also not a feminist as far as I'm concerned. So a woman writes a a series of stories that aren't actually truly BDSM (because that would involve caring for and respecting your partner), and you think that somehow invalidates how women feel about this song? There are plenty of feminist write ups about how awful the books are in relation to rape culture and how unhealthy the relationship described in the series is. Try again. Or don't. I have other things to do tonight. |
