I know it's pretty much a rule to grab your audience at the beginning, but how much does the first episode really mean to you?
I can honestly say that almost every anime I rate as one of my favorites has an opening episode I love. I just watched the first episode of Great Teacher Onizuka(which I loved in the 2 ep 45+ min format) and have to say if this was ALL there was, I'd still like it. It'd be way short and incomplete, but even if it were a 45 minute ova I'd still like it. I go on to watch more episodes after this post (So he's really leaving this first school? No more Nanako? I'll be crushed!!!!)
It's like, I just automatically know it is something I will enjoy. Honey and Clover was very funny in the first episode and I could see that dramatic undertone and when Waltz(the ED) came on, I was just blown away by it all. I was asking for shows that had some great animation and was recommended FMP. I loved the intro with Sousuke and the Hind helicopter and soon after, the characters. In Champloo, the end scene with all three of them tripping after Fuu flipped the coin and their looks were priceless.
I wonder if other people seem to have the "love at first sight" with their favorite anime and how it is with them. Funny that I just watched V for Vendetta last night and I had the same feeling about this as well.

Interesting that you mention H&C since that was the first and only anime so far that bored and annoyed me so thoroughly in its first episode that I could not force myself to watch any more to this day.

Yeah it matters. First time I saw the first episode of Yu Yu Hakusho I was hooked and that was the best anime beginning ever.

It really depends for me. Upon watching NGE, I learned a valuable lesson; don't judge a series based on one episode. I didn't like NGE all that much after the first 2 episodes, kind of got into it with the Rei episodes, and then was sold on it by the Asuka episodes, and even then I still had no idea what I was really in for.
But, on a completely contrasting side, take my experience with Noir. I saw a couple episodes On Demand after a night of clubbin', and thought it was alright (through the drunken haze, I should add), but wasn't impressed. Then came the day where I watched the first episode, completely sober, and right there with the tie-hanging scene I knew that I had to have this series. And, since I bought the thinpack shortly afterwards, it has been my favorite anime to this very day.
There are other experiences paralleling both of these experiences mentioned, but these are the two that stand out in my anime experience. It really depends, some series' do not grip me until a few episodes into it. But even if the first episode is "awesome-bad-ass-extreme," I'm still going to check out further episodes of it just to be sure that it stays that way and does not burn itself out in the course of its story.

To me, the first episode doesn´t have to be the greatest thing ever, but it also can´t be crap. I´ve learned that many series begin to take off after the whole introduction phase.
But some series have memmorable 1st episodes and those are trully shelf worthy, specially when they keep up the pace for the whole show.
I loved the Haibane Renmei 1st episode. The whole scene with the wings was one of the most emotional I´ve ever seen. I was watching late at night and was just really into the first episode from the opening scene were she is falling. Almost made me feel like I was in her shoes being thrown into this mysterious world.
Gungrave had a first episode I could´ve done without. It really ruined the series for me because everything was given away. I would have prefered the story starting at episode 2, or if not just the spoiler elements removed from the first episode. It took 4 DVD volumes for Harry to finally kill Brandon, even though we knew since volume/episode 1. The past was still my favorite part of the series though... which probably doesn´t say much for the latter half.

I love GTO. It think its so funny the way he does stuff. I've never seen the anime, but I've read two volumes of the manga and i think its hilarious. I was thinking about buying the naime sets because i think it would be cheaper then buying all the manga. And yeah to Mr.Roboto, the first episode of YYH really keeps you watching. The whole entire series is a Masterpiece too.

I think that the first episode is important to a series because obviously it will help lay out the frame work of a series. But that said lots of series are very different from the start of their series. But I try at least to watch 3-4 episodes before I decide not to watch a series anymore.....
Much like NGE a series can really be judge by it's cover nor it's first episode, just like my favorite seires of all time Monster! If I had stop after the first episode I would of assumed that it's a hospital drama type series.....damn was I wrong in a good way.
Till next time,

The first episode is usually pretty important to me, but it doesn't have to be the end all and be all, either.
For instance, the first episode of FMA was entertaining, but didn't put me over the top. It hooked me just enough to want to watch a couple more episodes, and by the time I got to episode four, I was hooked.
By comparison, the first episodes of Scryed and Eureka 7 both made me say "WTF??" and even though I tried to watch some future episodes beyond that, the series never got better for me.
Wolf's Rain and GITS: SAC both had pretty good first episodes that grabbed me from the start and made me want to keep watching. They had a good mix of introduction and action that really gave me a feel for what the series were going to be about.

I don't consider every anime staff to be perfect (obviously) like the staff that made Honey and Clover. I've often found anime that I started off not liking then liked later on. My limit is 5-7 episodes. If it doesn't provide some kind of decent plot by then, it's not worth seeing. So I really don't like anime that doesn't have a plot, no matter how highly praised it is.

Well, not to say I judge an anime by the first episode, far from it. Often enough though, the first episode really starts the enjoyment process for me. I won't say an anime is bad if I don't like the first episode that much(I didn't much care for the first ep of Haruhi actually, but liked the anime as a whole), but often times if I like the first episode enough, it'll most likely be on the top of my list.

I never go off the first episode, well, aside from Le Chevalier d'Eon so far, but I usually give it more episodes. Mushishi got me hooked in 2 episodes, whereas Noir took about 11 -_-...
I guess it depends on the type of series. I'm big on supernatural themes, so Chevalier and Mushishi were easy choices.

The first episode to a series usually means absolutely nothing more than just another episode to me. Before I watch an anime series, I always do some homework. Meaning, I go onto the encyclopedia of sites like this and get an idea of what the series is about along with some reviews. Basically, before I even start watching, I try to get a general idea of what the first episode is about, since a summary of the first episode is what encyclopedias usually provide as to what the series is about.
However, although I usually expect what the first episode is to be, there are still ones that I didn't particularly like, but still loved the series. For example, there is Suzumiya Haruhi with the home video and Elfen Lied with the whole killing sequence. While neither first episodes brought me great enjoyment, the series in complete to me were amazing. In the end, just watching the first episode is never enough. I hate stopping in the middle of a story, so I always keep going, even if it isn't as good as I had wanted it to be.

I'm the same way in that I start watching and don't stop even if it's a bad series. Some good examples are Shuffle! and He is My Master. They both didn't interest me very much at the start. HiMM stayed that way right through to the end but I found Shuffle! got better and better. Only anime I ever stopped watching was Gundam SEED Destiny. I lasted 6 episodes and then couldn't take it because I had just finished the 51 eps of Gundam SEED and to me it looked like it was starting again.

I think its important that you like some things of the first episodes - like the main character, the style and the general feel from the anime. However I never expect much from the first episode plot wise. Like Deltakiral said with Monster, if you left it at the first episode you would have no idea what you are in for and the series just keeps picking up more and more steam as it goes along.

I try to watch at least the first three episodes of an anime before I judge whether I like it or not. The first two episodes are usually just the introduction which helps set up the universe and its characters, so you can't really tell if it's going to be good or not based on the first episode alone. By the third episode though, you can usually tell what direction the series is going to head in. If the first three or so episodes were really enjoyable and I loved it a lot, I'll definetly continuing watching that series, but if they were just generally unimpressive yet still decent I might continue it another time, and if it felt like a chore to get through those episodes, I won't even bother watching the rest. Sometimes the first episode will be so terrible I can't even make it to the ending credits, but thankfully this only happens very rarily. However, I do believe that first impressions are exteremly important, so an anime that has a good first episode and maintains that kind of quality the rest of the series will definetly get extra brownie points from me.
