in episode3 of FLCL naota's dad is trying to sell some soda called "Cherio" that was endorsed by some really famous Japanese pop star, but then went under. i tried to look for info on it, but i can't find anything about it. was this a real drink? or was it just something made up for the show. i was just wondering cause in the dub they changed it to Crystal Pepsi, and i would think there wouldn't be any reason to change it if wasn't real.

According to some of the show notes from Ebichu:
in anime, companies won't pay for product placement. (Example: every time you see a Coke can on a tv show, Coke paid for it to be there) So anime companies make up products that sound similiar to real products. (In Ebichu, the office lady was wearing a DINKY shirt.....for DKNY.) Chances are there is some sort of soda that is similiar to Cherio (or whatever) but that's not it's real name. |

That happens all the time...
The one that stands out the most... SQNY! It's seen on Key the Metal Idol. Also, there's WcDonalds on Inuyasha and Maison Ikkoku if memory serves me right. It's both by the same author TAKAHASHI Rumiko... -- SpewMuffin |

The rich girl in episode 3 had a USSR t-shirt. Trash pop culture homage, or neo-Soviet advertising campaign?
Dun dun duuuuuuuuuun. |

Let's not forget the Vespa in every episode. Anyway, Cherio was a soda in japan that's been discontinued now. (a quick google search found that) (edit, here's the source: http://www.agefive.com/FLCL/html/f_a_q_.html ) Q9. In Episode 3 Kamon says that if his “local-zines” start to sell well, then he will finally be able to sell his stock of Cherio Pop. What is Cherio Pop? A9. I am not entirely sure, but from an interview I read with Synch-Point they talked about how they were working closely with Gainax to make sure Japanese culture references, like Cherio Pop, are translated into an American equivalent. Crystal Pepsi was an example of such an American Equavilent, though the Japanese equivillent was not listed. I think Cheiro Pop is supposed to be like Crystal Pepsi, and what Kamon said was a joke. He had bought a large stock of Chiero Pop, some kind of soda, like Crystal Pepsi, that was made years ago, but wasnt popular enough, so it sold like crap, like Crystal Pepsi. Hopefully Pepsi Blue Fusion will follow Cherio Pop and Crystal Pepsi. Something simmilar is said in an interview at Anime Tourist Emerje |

It doesn't have to be a logo. They change the names of products too. (Evidentally FLCL is an exception, but I never much paid attention to soda names in anime.) |

another example of the wcdonalds thing is in Hellsing. Anderson is walking the streets and theres a big sign that says LOSTERS. Losters would obviously be Fosters, a drink that is supposedly the only thing australian drink...
...fosters? |
