Good call speaking out against shota. I just bought an expensive Naruto doujinshi anthology on Ebay and I ended up having to tear pages out of it ( Crying or Very sad ) because there were two shota stories in it. The less of this stuff we get over here, the better.

I think one of the reasons shota is less villianized then loli is because the target audience (in Japan anyway) is women. Since women commit so fewer sex crimes than men, maybe people feel shota is "safer", or less likely to motivate a crime in real life.

I'd like to have a complete FMA DVD collection set, too, since I prefer to collect anime in bulk. However, as it's been said, it's not really fair to the people who buy the individual discs for a complete boxset to be available so soon. That's the reason (besides affordability) that people buy the individual discs.

I only wish that I wouldn't keep seeing these "starter set" boxsets and mistaking them for full boxset, turning it over, looking inside, and being disappointed. I do it EVERY TIME, even when I know there isn't one available. I guess it's just a personal defect. =D

That rant has to have been the worst yet best-written piece of unmitigated shit I've read in quite a while.

In addition, I hate yaoi fangirls. They ruin everything good about everything. From the fanfiction to the fanart, they need to die. I'm not bitter.

Good god. I mean, sure, they'd get solid business from former senator Mark Foley and Michael Jackson, but it'd be a publicity nightmare...Tokyopop is already getting away with publishing some pretty racy (although not pornographic) lolicon manga, so it could be just around the corner.

Legally, Jacko's innocent, but still creepy. Rolling Eyes Also, Tokyopop just edited a nude scene in Moon Phase. The closest we've gotten released here is that scene in the Crying Freeman manga with the sexually frustrated yakuza moll. *sigh*

Over here, though, the copyright issue is a much bigger deal and having a gigantic convention that sold nothing but unlicensed porno comics based on popular anime shows would likely be shut down for a variety of reasons.

It's considered protected under parody laws, which is why even Lucas couldn't do anything about that Star Wars hentai parody a while back. But you'd have to go through a crapload of litigation to be able to uphold that right. I'm actually surprised they haven't tried suing people who draw and post online porn of Batman and the Simpsons yet.

Anyway, thanks for the Tutu info. I know someone into ballet who might appreciate it.

Well for anyone waiting for a boxset for any Funimation series a Funi rep over on the Anime on DVD boards has stated in the past that the policy they keep for that is to wait two years after the release of the final single DVD before they release a boxset. I don't think FMA is going to get a single boxset anyway, especially if shows like Kiddy Grade and Tenchi Muyo! GPX aren't getting one, but then again the release is still two years away so who knows what the release will be like then.

I've had a tough time pinning down exactly what doujinshi is. You talk about it being smut and porn, as well as being based off other peoples' copyrights, but it was my understanding that doujinshi just referred to self-produced, self-published manga. Am I right, or is every doujinshi an erotic adaptation of a pre-established work?

I assume it's the same way as with fanfic. It doesn't have to have erotic encounters to be fanfic, but they're there more often than not.

3 things....

1. Mark Foley was a Congressman, not a Senator.
2. Most of what Antarctic Press used to put out (back when they did translated manga) was doujinshi, but it wasn't the fan-made parody kind of stuff....just small-run fan-made comics they could license for a song. Stuff like Silbuster, and Ippongi Bang's various series.
3. Yeah, sounds like the industry would be much, much better off if shoutacon stayed on the other side of the Pacific as much as possible.

Regarding the doujin question:

What about the Haibane Renmei doujins? Those would seem like a pretty safe bets to license if you ask me, since there's nothing worth objecting to.

If yes please could you provide the site where it is.
There is nothing in the history of this column that suggests I'd be willing to provide you with a place to download anime for free. Nothing.
Well, there is this column, but I'll admit, it was 5 years ago and not really providing places to download anime per sé (it's per sé, not per say!).

Also, you should sincerely consider buying the individual Princess Tutu DVD volumes. If you shop online and look for bargains, odds are you won't end up paying full price for 'em anyway.
Well, the reviews do indicate that I'd like Princess Tutu, since I tend to like lots of Magical Girl shows despite being the wrong age and gender for them. I've shown respect by not DLing it, but...*this is going to sound cynical and unpopular* There's no need to get the inevitable thinpack to get PT for cheap, since once the thinpack is out, the singles with all their lovely extras will surely be liquidated for dirt cheap at various online sites. (I plan to do the same for Area 88 TV.) I wasn't really aware of PT as the discs were coming out, but since they did all get released, it's just capitalism at work for me to get the maximum amount of anime for the minimum amount of money--desires are infinite, but money is finite.

Not for a long while.

Really, anyone who's asking about FMA boxed sets so soon after the individual disc release finishes just doesn't really understand the trends and economics of anime DVD releases. Besides, a 13-disc set seems a bit excessive--I'm betting on boxes of 7/6 or 5/4/4.

Shoutacon is under my radar, so I couldn't care less about it...however, given the reactions to the incidents involving Debra LeFave and Mary Kay Letourneau, I think I can imagine what the mainstream reaction would be.

So for the time being, no, I think most US publishers are smart enough to stay away from it for now. But who knows what'll happen in the future? Tokyopop is already getting away with publishing some pretty racy (although not pornographic) lolicon manga, so it could be just around the corner.

Like what exactly? I can't think of a Tokyopop series that can be considered semi-loli. Maybe I'm just not thinking hard enough, but I believe they have pretty good standards as far as that stuff goes.

Considering how insanely lenient their sentences were and how little real public outcry there was versus what there would have been if the genders were reversed, I wouldn't be surprised if no one cared. (Didn't Letourneau have a cover on People? Can you see a male teacher involved with a female student getting a magazine cover?)

Personally, considering that shoutacon and lolicon hentai manga are fictional stories about fictional characters, I don't understand why people get worked up over them. It's not real. There's a flashback scene in Stephen King's IT involving the main characters when they were children that's a gang bang and no one's tried to lock King up for writing it. (Page # 1030 in my paperback copy is the scene's start but most of it is on the bottom of 1035 forward. IT is a long book but pretty awesome until it gets close to the end, then it gets stupid in places.)

Just because it's text doesn't change the fact that it's underage fictional characters having sex. But people don't care about that because it's a book. Books can have anything in them and people pretty much don't care. But add one picture and suddenly everyone goes insane. Just because there are some drawings, it's still fictional.

I see no difference between a fictional depiction of violence versus one of sex. It doesn't matter because it's not real. It's like people getting worked up over anything else that's not real, it's silly. A lot of younger murderers have played violent games but the games didn't make them kill. A lot of rapists have watched violent porn but the porn didn't make them rape.

John Douglas, one of the first true profilers, said in one of his books (I think it was The Anatomy of Motive) that what criminals watched or read didn't make them commit crimes, but it might give them ideas for things to do when they commited their crimes. Like the guys in Utah who poured drain cleaner down people's throats after seeing it in a TV show (might have been a movie, need to reread that book.) These psychos already planned to rob a place and kill everyone there, but they decided the use the drain cleaner because they saw it used and thought it would work fast.

My point: People may get ideas for HOW to do terrible things, but they still CHOOSE to do them. Not everyone who watches a murder in a show or commits one in a game goes out and murders someone. Same for rape or any other crime. And when someone commits a crime, they should be punished swiftly and harshly and publically to deter others from commiting the same crime. (You don't even want to know what I'd do to people who hurt children if I was in power.)

Would it hurt anime and manga's reputation if lolicon and shoutacon stuff started appearing in the mainstream stores? Hell yes! I'm sure when someone first wrote a novel with something like this in it, it was probably very controversial. Not really any more though. Now it's acceptable.

Why? Because rational people said "it's not real."

And now I've probably started another lolicon debate. . . . Twisted Evil

I'll apologize for the long post but not my opinions.

Calling

Doujinshi = parody porn

is the same as calling

Anime = super robot + ninja + big-eyed schoolgirls with big boobs and panty shot

Doujinshi stands for self-published manga. Period. So why do we see >95% doujinshi are erotic parodies? Simple: they are easier to sell because

1. It can sell even with only average artwork and crappy story. A doujinshi with original characters and story needs good artwork and a decent story.

2. It satisfies people's fantasies. Remember in Genshiken ep. 2 when Sasahara enters Comic Toranoana for the first time? First he saw a bunch of ero-ge (adult computer games, mostly dating sims) parody doujinshi, but was not too interested because ero-ge are already packed with more carefully drawn and vivid erotic scenes. Then he was attracted to ero-doujinshi parody of fighting games (e.g. King of Fighters, Dead or Alive). In games characters might be suggestive but no real pornographics would be shown, so doujinshi fills the gap.

Answerman wrote:
Another big thing to consider is that in Japan, doujinshi is almost exclusively self-published; serious companies like Kadokawa won't touch the stuff with a 10-foot pole.

Of course they wouldn't be publishing doujinshi. If a manga is published by a company then it's not a doujinshi at all; it would be called a shougyoushi (商業誌, commercial imprint) instead. However, there are many manga-ka started as non-erotic, original (non-parody) stories and characters, namely CLAMP and Kaoru Mori. Just like topless girls at Cannes Film Festival: there are scouts looking for rookie manga-ka potentials at major doujinshi conventions as well.

And we know that an average-looking topless girl can attract more attention than a beautiful yet normally-dressed girl can at the beach of Cannes. Mr. Green
