Whats a good anime to watch for Halloween? I was thinking some horror ones like Blue Gender or Alien Nine. What does everyone watch over the Halloween season to get you in the spirit?

Le Portrait de Petit Cossette, Kakurenbo, and maybe Blood: The Last Vampire. These anime just scream Halloween to me, especially Kakurenbo, which I got to see for the first time when it aried on CN.
Cossette is a personal favorite. Love stories with supernatural themes are always on my list. And the animation for this one is just fantastic, the character designs are gorgeous and the story is gripping (at least I thought so.) Blood is always good. Saya slicing monsters with her sword is great action. Just wish that the sequal series was out already. I like to keep my watching down to shorter series just at Halloween itself. |

A second vote for Kakurenbo anime#4485. That one is just a bit spooky! I did like it when I saw it on Cartoon Network but it's spooky and I probably will not deliberately watch it again. But then again, I don't particularly like the horror genre if it counts in that category.

I just saw Petite Cossette this weekened and I have to agree that it is a pretty good choice for holloween. Not just because of the spooky atmosphere and animation, but also that gothic feel that it has would work really well. Of course the blood and gore are a plus too. I'd also say Requiem from the Darkness would work well. It has a lot of supernatural elements and tells some really good stories. I also like the animation; everything is all distorted and ill-proportioned, and the dark colors and shadows work wonders for setting a spooky atmosphere. And let's not forget that this year we get a double scare in October, along with Halloween, the 13th falls on a friday, so double up on your horror anime. ETA: I forgot to add one that I'm always looking to plug because I think more people should watch it: Pet Shop of Horrors Many mythical and mystical creatures. A lot of unexplained phenomenon. A real supernatural feel. This short set has some really good stories to tell and it tells them well, with the weird but delightful Count D as the host. Paranoia Agent- very psychlogical, not scary or anything like that....but it does make you think dark thoughts

I've only seen the Group Suicide episode where three characters travel around trying to kill themselves. That's enough to creep me out. I expect no less from the remainder of the series. |

Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni seems like an obvious one to me. It just finished also, right in time for Halloween. There was thread like this last year also. Probably the year before too, I'm guessing.

I second Higurashi, and if you want to scare little kids from trying to trick or treat at your house, just tape a picture of evil Rena on your front door.
Jigoku Shoujo is also a good one, although it gets a bit repetitive after a while. There's a new series this season, Ghost Hunt, which seems to deal with the supernatural. I haven't seen it yet, although, judging from a synopsis and a few screenshots it seems decent enough to me.
Moon Phase is about as scary as Narutaru is kid-friendly. |

Gregory Horror Show this show is so scary it's not even funny.....
 . Well I mean it's nice from the fact every episode is self contained and only runs for 10 mins or so.....not only that the animation is downright scary.

i third kakurenbo. It might seem weird but im planning to watch moonphase this halloween. once i try to get petite cossette that one too. Also for some weird reason i would add in boogiepop phantom and paranoia agent...but i have weird tastes in anime. |

I'll probabally break out Elfen Lied for another rewatch. Very bloody and gory to fit the occasion however, it has has an impressive story and great characters to balance it out. It's one of my favorite series. Last year I had a Lunar Legend Tsukihime marathon to kick things off.

I imagine Hellsing would be perfect for Halloween (haven't actually seen it myself, though I'd like to).
Vampire Princess Miyu is a great choice. It's a very moody anime OAV and it's only 4 episodes (though unfortunately it's 2 DVDs long). It has some beautiful art as far as 80s anime goes & the plot has some very creepy things. You could also try the anime series as well, but I found the OAV to be much better (I stopped about halfway through the TV series). Another good choice would be Boogiepop Phantom. It's slow paced and hard to follow at times due to the fact that it goes back and forth in time instead of following a traditional narrative structure, but if you like a mental challenge and are up for horror galore, it should be right up your alley. If you're in the mood for something a bit lighter, I recommend Karin. It's an anime TV series about a high school girl who is a reverse vampire (she injects blood instead of drinks it). I thought it was surprisingly good - sort of like The Adam's Family if it was an anime and mixed with a shoujo romance. And I'll second the votes for Pet Shop of Horrors, Paranoia Agent, and Higurashi Naku no Koro ni. |
