It's very simple.
The "Sign" series goes first, then the first four video games, then (my favorite)"Legend of the Twilight (a.k.a. Dusk)", then "Roots". Roots and the newest vg coincide, if I am correct.
If you watch Roots first, then the entirety of 12 Legend of the Twilight episdoes will be spoiled. You can watch Legend of Twilight first, though.

The thing with the .hack//Roots and .hack//GU, you might want to watch some, up to 23 from what I heard here on the board, of .hack//Roots to understand what happens, of say, the first flippn' 20 minutes of the game. It spoils part of .hack//Roots.

I wrote this in an another .hack based thread, but to answer your question yes. I believe to get the most out of the series you do need to watch/read/play to get the most out of it. I would say that .hack//SIGN can be viewed as a standalone product. Items that need to be watched with other items, .hack//Legend of the Twilight should be watched after beating the first four games for PS2.
.hack//Roots should be watch and then you could play GU, although you get do vice-versa....it doesn't really matter however I am enjoying GU even with Root being so bad....
Also the new books "Another Birth" should be read after playing the original four PS2 games.

.hack//SIGN Anime 2002-04-04 to 2002-09-25 & .hack//Another Birth Novel
.hack//Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, Quarantine February 11, 2003 to US: January 13, 2004 (PS2)
.hack//LOTT (Manga/Anime) 2003-01-08 to 2003-03-26 (anime) 2002-07-30 (Manga)
.hack//Zero (Although I can't confirm if it take place between LOTT and SIGN, since it's not in English yet but it does come between SIGN and GU.)
.hack//GU (PS2) 10-24-2006
.hack//Roots (Anime spans a 9 month window sometime before the main part of GU) 2006-04-05 to 2006-09-27
.hack//GU (PS2 game start before roots and roots fill in details on Haseo, and the game picks up after the meeting with Tri-edge) 10-24-06 |

I didn't think that Legend of Twilight had anything to do with the other series (I mean obviously it was a sequel to the games, but I didn't think it led to anything new).
Anyways, yeah, you should probably watch them in order. You don't NEED to, I'm playing GU right now and you certainly don't HAVE to play/watch the prior material to play this one, but there are already a lot of "in jokes" and elements that are more meaningful if you experienced the other media. GU is a whole new story though, basically a "generation" after the previous ones, similar to a Tenchi GPX or a Mai Otome.

Agreed, you don't have to play the original four games, but the characters Kite and BlackRose both hold a more emotional value to them since you already has this idea of who they are, and what their importance is with "the world". But more then anything LOTT was just a way of seeing the people you loved in the videogames again, I have heard that the manga does a better job with introducing more character from the game, but the anime did a fair job in my opinion.

couldnt have said that one better, i just thought that seeing the best set of characters, in my opinion, in the .hack//Franchise so far in anime form was the purpose for LOTT and i LOVE that ending theme song and i thought it also became dramatic towards the end which made it pretty good

To save the 30 minute head scratch and WTFs, it'll be better if you watch .hack//Roots before you even turn on .hack//GU.
Girl in coma? Some guy, with a name sounds like ovan, leaves a guild? News to me, too bad the game can't fill me in better.

I don't know, I did see Roots first, but I don't think I would have been TOO lost just playing GU (I think the Japanese were watching Roots AS they played through the first two parts). There's a mystery there, but it's doled out over time, similar to Lost or something.

As for what came first...

About 5 or 6 episodes in to it from the looks of it. Vol 2 didn't hit stores till a little over a month ago.

Ah, ok. Well I'm about ten hours into GU right now, and I think they've given enough to get the gist without Roots. There is definitely a disconnect at the begining, but it's just non-linear storytelling. You pick up the bullet points of Roots over the course of the first few hours of gameplay.

Regarding the games . . . I own all of them (and .//Liminality) but have only reached up to the 3rd game, .hack//Outbreak. Does this mean I cannot watch //Roots? I'm a stickler for playing/watching stuff in order, I can't even write up a review of .hack//GU though I'd love to do it.

You could watch Roots, and/or play GU because those two pieces really take place outside of everything from the original world. I mean I try to do everything in order, but I watched part of LOTT while I was finishing up the last two games. I don't think you will be lost by skipping ahead a bit, but you might be asking yourself what's going on a bit.
