This sounds kind of funny, really. First time I've ever heard about people impersonating the legal team of a company to scam people out of their money. Impersonating a police officer, I've seen. Impersonating politicians, I've seen a lot. But impersonating an attorney is actually rather funny.
I hope the actualy licensing people behind Zatch Bell! are gentle with the pachinko manufacturer. If all goes well, the money paid to the scam artists will go towards the REAL license. |

In some ways, it's amazing how they tried to keep their façade.
I hope the pachinko manufactures got a good deal with the real license-holders. |

Even if these three alleged pseudo-licensors don't spend any time in the Big House for this, they will be spending quite a bit of their time dealing with their slim wallets.

How stupid and how unfortunate for them.

Is someone going to make this into an movie at some point? I feel like with proper casting and the right luxury cars it would be an interesting flick.

I was just reading an article about how anyone can submit any content online regardless of whether or not they created it, without even giving credit to the original creators this afternoon.
And then I see this. Do you think the inherit yet fallacious privilege of being able to submit already made content on the internet without even being outed for plagiarism somehow led to this? Most likely it's just a freaky coincidence, but eh. |

The last time I heard of something like this happening, it was in the 1990s and involved an international license. Eternity Comics published a Captain Harlock comic book series back then by Tim Eldred and Ben Dunn.
But the plug got pulled suddenly, and the story was that whoever sold the rights to Eternity Comics had nothing to do with Leiji Matsumoto. A shame, really, because those were pretty good, IIRC. Dunn did a great impression of Matsumoto's style. The biggest difference was in the storytelling: the US comics were trying to construct a coherent continuity instead of repeatedly taking a hammer to it There was even a Queen Emereldas miniseries. I can almost imagine a con artist thinking they could get away with "licensing" a series overseas back then; the unauthorized product might never be noticed. But domestically? Today? Come on! |

When someone claims to have such rights to a public domain title, that's called copyfraud.

Is Zatch Bell! public domain?
In any case, something previously in the public domain can then be copyrighted if there's no effort to keep it public domain. As long as NASA continues to exist, for instance, every photo its spacecrafts take will remain public domain. On the other hand, the smily face, which was previously public domain, was then claimed by Franklin Loufrani and currently owned by his son Nicolas, whose licensing is incredibly heavy-handed. (Rumor has it that the difficulty and expense of licensing smiley faces nowadays is the reason behid Watchmen getting caught further in development hell. I must wonder if Loufrani is also responsible for Viz needing some time to publish Assassination Classroom.) |
