Something that has been bothering me for quite a while now is how the covers to the Hunter X Hunter manga are strikingly similar to Dragonball manga covers. I have an import manga from the first run of Dragonball that I bought many years ago and I've noticed that most of the Hunter X Hunter manga features one of the main characters riding on some sort of creature just like many of the Dragonball manga do. Is this because Yoshihiro Togashi is a big fan of Dragonball and wanted to show his appreciation for Toriyama's artwork? Perhaps it is even Akira Toriyama himself that drew some of the Hunter X Hunter covers.
Some of the other Hunter X Hunter covers have a completely different design possibly taking after other manga titles. For example volume 10 of the English HXH manga reminds me of Flame of Recca. |

Aren't almost all shonen manga-ka fans of Toriyama? I wouldn't be surprised if Togashi was just paying homage. In any case, I like the varied covers of HxH, they suit the series nicely.

I would assume many shounen artists were once shounen fan, so it's possible that Togashi is a fan of Toriyama. I know Oda (One Piece) is a big fan of Toriyama.
Also, HxH and DBZ are both weekly shounen jump title, so companies tend to recycle cover idea and design. I'm not sure how much control the Managua has over his cover and how much is influence by the editor and publisher. But I think it's more of a coincidence that two color have some similaries. |
