Hello everyone! Guess what. There's a new manga coming up in April 2007 with the English title of "Nymphet." It's about "precocious 3rd Grade students." Seven Seas Entertainment is releasing it. Check it out!

I ask you, could manga like this attract the wrong attention from the always-willing-to-destroy-scandal-loving American media? Twisted Evil

Here, let me show you an example page I found in the net.

I'm no prude. I may be overreacting to something I don't have much information about at this time. But I think it may be just above and beyond what is accepted in the market today. What do you think?

If I had to say something based on that page alone I'd agree and say 'yuck', but since I haven't seen the whole thing I won't make any rash judgements. But it does seem sort of sad that Seven Seas thinks that this is the sort of thing that will sell well. Japan maybe... with its huge cult like loli base, but America? Is this loli obsession catching on here as well? I'm scared.

Ever since I heard that it was licensed, I've been asking myself: What the hell are they thinking?

I glanced through a random chapter after it was licensed just to see what it was like and it didn't even look that good (this coming from a person who doesn't mind lolicon). If they were going to license a lolicon oriented manga, surely they could have found something better (the artwork isn't particularly good, IMO) and less nausea inducing to people more sensitive to the subject?

To be fair though, it seems to be a comedy rather than something that wants to be taken seriously. And based on the little I read and what I've heard, it seems that the girl is trying to come on to the teacher and the teacher is NOT into that kind of thing (though he sure seems to be enjoying himself in that picture).

Real subtle of her. Maybe seven seas is hoping for negative publicity to sell that manga.

Still, it's obvious who they were trying to appeal to when they made this, whether or not the teacher is lolicon or not. I haven't read it though...

I am not happy that this was licensed though... Not because I don't like it, but because I know it is only going to cause more hatred and draw more negative attention to lolicon (which it already has in this thread). Something which I would rather be kept underground...

If it costs as much as regular manga, I'll buy the entire set. This looks hilarious.

Edit:

I have to say it raised my eyebrows more than just a tad. And from what has been said about familial reactions by others on this forum...God help them if they are caught while reading that portion! And just think of the reaction of the mother/father who ignorantly purchases it for their under 13 child and then sees what it's about!

I have to agree with PantsGoblin, this should be kept deep, deep underground.

I just hope that the stores that do carry it make damn sure that it is shrinkwrapped.

Well ya, that also. 4chan does have its share of lolicon though.

What do you think this will be rated? And I seriously doubt they will translate that page to saw the word "ejaculate inside me". They might even change it entirely to be less naughty.

I don't know. I can't explain why I'm so moved to speak by this one particular manga being released in the USA. Seven Seas Entertainment's title in English is "Nymphet." (No, really. Look here.) Does freedom of speech protect you from blowing your foot off with a shotgun (figuratively speaking)? I see a lot of red flags. Historically speaking, the media is more than happy to pick on something like this and make a huge stink about it. As fans we've come to accept excessive underwear shots and breast flashes in most mainstream titles. And we've come to accept that the female characters in all adult anime DVDs and PC games are 18 and over. You know, college students. But "precocious 3rd Grade students," as Seven Seas puts it? You've seen Viz censor and change a manga image because it looked like a cross. What is, if anything, Seven Seas gonna do about "ejaculate inside of me"?? What clever English language trick are they gonna come up with to translate naka-dashi? Again, they're calling the manga "Nymphet". (I can't believe it. A 3rd Grade female character is a nymphet.) Are we going to accept this also and make it part of fandom in the US?

The first amendment is not a free pass that allows common sense to be trampled. Edit: At least, I don't think it should be. I think I have accepted all I can accept when it comes to Japanese animation and manga. I don't think I'll be able to accept this. If the rest of "Nymphet" is like I think is going to be, then that is a point we in the US should not go past. It troubles me because I am a fan and I know what material doesn't make it across the Pacific from Japan, usually.

Are you saying this shouldn't be allowed to come to the US? If so, I'd have to disagree. Just because you personally find it disgusting, doesn't mean it shouldn't be allowed. There are people who find excessive violence, pornography, etc. to be disgusting, does this mean they shouldn't be allowed too?

I fail to see how that should apply. Personally, I feel they are making a mistake by licensing it, and I would agree to some extent that they're not really using "common sense" in their decision. Do I have any right to prevent them from doing it? No. Would this be the first company to make a mistake? No. Does the government have the right to prevent them from bringing this over because they feel it's a stupid business move? Absolutely not.

There's like 5 companies putting out mangas of DUDES hoping to ejaculate into each other with, like, EARS OF CORN, and then suck it out with a straw, with a fanbase so rabid that they get their own freaking convention every year in the Gay Capital of America, except that instead of celebrating gay culture it's more like objectifying and fetishizing them, and you're worried about one title from one company that's probably better known for inadvertently preventing Australians from ever reading Boogiepop?

I don't claim to be an alarmist social watchdog, but if I were, I think I know which Japanomaniac sexual subculture I'd worry about first.

"Put it in me"? Laughing

They've already accepted male-male teacher-student shota rape and OEL furry erotica, so why not?

If there should happen to be shots of our dear little "nymphet" in partial undress, or panty-flashing, then I do believe shrinkwrapping is in order. However, if the only racy content consists of verbal innuendo as shown above, that makes it no worse than, say, Nabokov's Lolita, except minus the literary value. I mean, just speaking in terms of content.

Disclaimer: I haven't read this series, so I'm just making up crap.

Oh, and to answer the title of the thread: Yes, I think it is always a good idea to challenge sexual norms and attitudes with manga releases like this, especially among a fan culture that makes such pretensions towards "open-mindedness" except that they're really not. I'll never forget the yaoi fangirl that came by this forum and hailed yaoi as the most sacred and pure form of love and dismissed all yuri as disgusting, leaving everyone else with a collective "WHAT? O___O" And even the head of hentai publisher Icarus Comics quakes in his cum-stained boots at the mere mention of little girls, which is funny because you'd think a pr0n peddler would be the last person to have limits of comfortability. I'm not saying that such fetishes need to be celebrated, but they should at least be considered, and not locked away in a closet (hurhur) and willed away from existence.

That should be exactly what we're worrying about - the downturn of public opinion towards Otakus. Many uninformed people already think that anime/manga are all about hentai, and underage hentai (they probably won't use the word "loli") would really bring us down.
