Hopefully Nintendo will take the franchise back to it's earlier roots when it had a story. If they had expanded the series based on what they revealed in the old Nintendo Power magazines they could have taken the story further into Wing Commander territory. That's what should have been done when the series was introduced the first time.
But so far it looks nice. Hopefully we'll see a little more before April.

The least important part of Star Fox is its story. Its a 3D Shoot'em up with branching paths at its core. Taking the series back to its Star Fox/Star Fox 64 framework would do a lot to making this series stand out again after so many misfires.
That said, the Nintendo Power Star Fox Manga was pretty radical.

I agree. I'm not an avid player of the game, but I have played the first game and battle mode with the N64 game. So I did see this series as having potential as a new title in Nintendo's library. Plus, it took some time just to make new games. Star Fox 2 didn't happen and before you knew it we had one for N64, NGC, a few portables up to the DS. And you're right the game was more about the "branching" aspect, replaying on the various difficulty levels. But yeah, I do see your point. I guess with little bit of backstory I did see (like with Metroid) there was much more to add to the universe along with the flight combat missions. And yep I've heard the pain of those that weren't happy with those that "missed" the hoop shot.
If you're referring to the ones illustrated by Benimaru Itoh, back in the days, those pieces were great. He did the Metroid stuff as well. I found one used manga on Mother 2 (Earthbound) illustrated by him. His work is great.
