Oh I've wanted to ask this question for a looooong time!!
I came to the same conclusion years ago:it's not real. Still, there's nothing more hilarious than listening to your favorite male voice actor go from an action anime hero to moaning while taking it from behind in a Drama CD.  I really should start importing seiryuu events; I don't think the U.S has anything similar to such a clever form of marketing a product while promoting the actors.
Since Justin mentioned it, why does a female VA in a hentai get paid less than a male VA in a Drama CD? Could it be that the cost of producing a porn anime take away from paying for booth time or are fujoshi fans more dedicated to get the biggest bang for their buck? Also, for the forum: what's your favorite/recommended BL Drama CDs? |

While the answer is informative, I think the asker was actually asking something different than was answered. To me, it looked like they were asking why established anime voice actors still voice drama CDs and whether it's a step backward for their career (like the stigma for a film actor doing TV spots or straight-to-DVD movies).
Perhaps they are unaware that drama CDs are not just for yaoi since they seem to use drama CD and BL CD interchangeably? |

I was browsing the Mandarake site the other day for cheap CDs and I couldn't believe how many yaoi drama CDs are out there. I had no idea how huge of a market there was for CDs of boys whispering sweet nothings (though maybe I should have anticipated it given that they're making anime of stuff like Pillow Boys now...)
Drama CDs are something that never seemed to catch on with the English-speaking fandom at all. There are hardly even fan translations for the really popular ones. I wonder if it's because radio shows aren't really a thing in the US anymore, of if it's because you just can't really get the full experience without understanding the language. Personally I find little interest in them. I'd be just as happy reading a transcript/translation of the story. |

Well, there ARE full-cast aidio books in the West (like Dune, for example), so it's not that it doesn't exist in the West. |

I would like to think that the best place can you attracts more fans is in BLCD. So, it's is a good place to start and to continue to be in for new and old actors. With blcd, because listener concentrate mostly on the voice, if you're casted as any of the leads, or supporting leads, your chance of gaining recognition and fans who likes your (not only the characters, story, mangaka, or author), but your very voice as an actor, the number of fans can increase exponentialy.
Watching and listening are two different thing. Watching, you most likely more into the story and characters , and animation than the voice. The voice is an extra bonus for visual work. However with audio work, it's up to the voice to bring the character and story to life. Even if the story is simple and short, the voice can make all the differences in how enjoyable it is. If not for blcd, I wouldn't have become fans, or known, of so many actors. In which, before i wouldn't care much so long as the anime is visually pleasing and story is good. But, now, sometimes I would watch or listen to a work not immediate of interest to me just because of the actor(s).
Seikanji-ke series. I can't recommend this series enough. Lol. Awesome casts list. |

Anyways, at the end of the day, it's just a job. It's not like you even have to "do the deed" in question in the case of voice actors. |

 Cool question. Often wondered about the BLCD side of the voice acting.
I still get a case of the giggles when I hear Kamiya Hiroshi voicing a part in a BLCD, I associate him too strongly with Natsume's Book of Friends anime. Haven't really heard Daisuke Ono in any of the stuff I listen to... Morikawa Toshiyuki is one of my favorites to listen to and am amazed at the range of characters he has voiced. Some of the casting of voice actors in BLCD don't always seem to match up with the particular story/character every so often. BLCDs are fun to listen to, though depending on which manga you're listening to it can be a tad embarrassing and others nothing really happens. My favorite/recommended BLCD: Devil's Honey, Tight Rope, Sugar Code, Kiraboshi Dial, NightS, No Touching at all, Kuroneko Karachi no Asobi Hou, Border 1-3, and Haru wa Daiteita. I like the stories the mangaka wrote and the casting of voice actors are good.

Reminds me of the voice actor of Kiba from Naruto: Kousuke Toriumi, who worked on a hentai but refused to do the sex scenes.
In the end at every sex scene you only hear the girl and his lines are displayed as subtitles xD |

I was thinking the same thing but I was thinking maybe how he phrased his question or that he focused on Yaoi Drama CDs rather than in general (shojo and the like). But yeah I was thinking of the same question with it leaning more to "Why are top seiyuus doing Drama CDs in general?" But I think I still managed to have my question answered with what Justin said. |

Why do A-level VA´s sometimes work on "softcore" pr0n as Queen’s Blade? Show Me the MONEY!!! Why do i occasionally sign up for Sunday work and overtime? Show Me the MONEY!!! And so on.
I agreed with Justin that age restricted hentai / pink films is where careers secretly start or where they finally end (the Idol market...) but Japanese nigh-time tv get´s Shounen-ai and not Yaoi shows. There are absolutely drama cassettes out there, and probably vinyls as well, as the vinyl format was quite popular in Japan. Audio dramas did not just suddenly manifest with the creation of the CD format. However, the real question here should be "when did yaoi become mainstream enough to warrant this kind of media?" Because while it did happen to see a surge in popularity and acceptance around that same time, manga-style homoerotic/homoromantic works have existed in Japan for a very, very long time prior to that. The issue is not whether CDs enabled this to become a thing, but rather, when did it become financially viable to produce them regardless of the intended physical format.
If this is true, it's hilarious considering how homophobic he is (was?). |
