SASUGA ONII-SAMA.

In all seriousness, I know Western fans like to write him off as an OP Gary Stu, but they're completely missing the point of his character. He's OP by design and the story is focused around this. He might not struggle in a fight, but his attempts at keeping a low profile and living a normal life never goes the way he wants it to. That's his struggle, to be normal while still protecting his sister without upsetting the world's power balance. And he only succeeds at one of those things. That's what makes him interesting. That and how it subverts the whole power fantasy thing. He has all this power but that means everyone is trying to manipulate him and treat him like a tool. Having all that power has just made his life worse.

His inability to read social cues and get jokes can be pretty funny.

Also glad to see Shizuku and Honoka rank so highly.

Are we talking about the same character who's good at everything, every time, knows it all, characters are measured by their interactions with him, girls or fawn at him or think they are too low for him?

A textbook Mary Sue.

Yes, everybody likes Jesus.

No it doesn't and no, it doesn't. If this was a comedy it might work. What is interesting about the series is how the families and everyone else plot around him, not he himself.

That's the thing tho, it's not "Plot around him", it's "Plot about him".

OP, you say? No, Kirito is OP. Tatsuya is a living god with perfect offense, defense, and support skills. He's like Saitama, only he's not funny or amusing to watch.

Secondly, you note his struggle between his devotion to his sister and the world, saying that people are trying to treat him like a tool, but then you never take the next step to the logical conclusion. He is a tool. He does allow himself to be used. There is no actual struggle between him and those who use him. Tatsuya, insofar as we saw him in the anime, just tried not to upset the apple cart and kept the status quo in place.

What is the status quo? It's boring. No one likes things staying the same, not in anime and not in life. Had Tatsuya shown some honest-to-goodness rebellion and actually had to choose between his sister and the world, Mahouka could've actually been really interesting to watch, but it never goes there, and it never really seems to try.

You do know we weren't talking about the anime, right? Neutral

The anime's status-quo isn't the LN's. Also, are you touched in the head? Do you think Tatsuya is the only strong guy out there? There's around 50 people with Strategic-Class Magics all around the world.

Beyond this, you're assuming that Tatsuya's only reason of being is Miyuki. Search spoiler[ Project ESCAPES] on google. <.<

PS: Please don't bring that ratty ass anime to a discussion about Mahouka. That thing only had music and visuals going for it.

There are other immortal people in Mahouka?

The thing is Tatsuya could very easily blow up the apple cart if he wanted to. Any and all threats to Miyuki's safety, his own family included can easily be wiped out. But he doesn't do that. He knows full well that should he dispose his aunt or something then some one even worse might fill the void. Most OP protags just Kamehameha their way through obstacles and everything just works out in the end for them, but that's not how it would work in real life. Using his powers is Tatsuya's last resort and he's always trying to think of ways to solve problems without using them. But he's increasingly put into situations where he doesn't have other options.

I don't dislike the series, but Tatsuya's OPness is in a league of its own. He can: shoot nukes, shoot through walls, not only can fly but invented flying (magic), can bring not only himself but anyone else whose close enough (I don't remember the exact limitations) back to life. And that's just off the top of my head. Maybe there are some other strong people in universe but with so broad a swath of powers? I don't know but hopefully if it is to remain interesting. People criticizing him for being wildly OP aren't missing the point, they are just rejecting it.

Maybe what you said would work if mahouka's world didn't emulate the politics or power struggles in the real world. If he rebeled it could throw the entire world into chaos and that would be counter-productive to his goals and motivations, which are protecting his sister(and his friends) and improving the social status of magicians.

I think that the problem is that most of the world building and stuff only has a bigger focus post-anime. Most people don't know about a certain spoiler[sponsor], the power of other Strat magicians, the power dynamics inside the Ten Master Clans, the USNA (tho the movie will probably find a way to address that...i hope), etc... That and the anime cut out a lot of the details. People might say "well, if they cut them out, then it probably wasn't needed.". Thing is, it indeed wasn't needed, for the anime. I'm pretty sure they're not making another season of Mahouka, and if they are, it'll still lead to the same "Tatsuya is Jesus" memes.

All in all, unless you read the LN's properly, you won't change your mind about Mahouka. No other way around it.

While Tatsuya is certainly cool because of his OP'ness - I think his best scenes are his occasional moments of fail. When his absolutely logical personality fails him and what he thinks of a situation doesn't line up with how the other characters perceive him and the situation.

The most famous would be his supposed seduction of Mayumi - while he talks about accepting an invitation to a restaurant/indulging in food. Laughing
