Despite it's wackiness, and the awesome, action-filled scenes, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is officially a "Horror and Suspense" comic. It can have pretty characters [starting from part 4/5 on], big meaty people [part 1 and 2], and dogs [part 3], and there's even some comedy and drama, but it's all with a sense of horror. One way that it's portrayed, though, that has been lost on me for most of my reading experience is the sound of tension.
I read somewhere online that one of the two or three symbols (characters) used was basically "Fuu..." which, when repeated, was basically the sound of rumbling tension or suspense. Obviously, when the character for is fills up half the page, it's a very tense moment/situation. I'm going to give two images from a scanlated version of JoJo's, both filled with the most common, what I'd assume to be tension characters. My question is this:, what do the symbols for each picture come out to sound like and do they both portray tension/suspense? Here are said images:

*cracks knuckles* I always love a JoJo thread!
I have read parts 1 and 2 scanlated, and all viz volumes of part 3 to date. Great series, the author himself defined it strictly as a suspenseful manga, and denounces the term horror (altho it does seem applicable here.) As far as sound effects go, those are katakana, one of the two phonetic japanese alphabets. The sounds on page one are pronunced "do" (hard o), and could mean big impact or loud hearbeat. (I used http://www.oop-ack.com/manga/soundfx.html for reference) The second page has the same symbol over and over, "go", which translates as "general menace, a threatening atmosphere" One of the great things about Viz releases, is they translate all the sfx for you! Pick some up today man! |
