Similar to the earlier Answerman question of occurrence of violence against children in anime vs Western shows, if it isn't more prevalent in anime(and I'd argue it is), it certainly is in manga vs in Western comics, some underground examples exempted.

The original manga was great. Last Order had its moments, but it was overall so-so. I originally collected it up to volume 11 which was the point where I gave up. Then sold it and later re-purchased the series due to the release of omnibus editions. Too much time wasted on a fighting tournament. The focus of Mars Chronicles doesn't interest me at all. I think it's worst in the series. Maybe I still collect it at one point, but I plan to see the movie first.

IMHO, Martial Chronicle is way too grimdark. Wonder if Kishiro is slipping into depression again.
They also did reach the point where we find out about Alita's origin, its...original.

I always knew more Gunnm manga would get made (and that I would buy it), but didn't we already learn enough about Alita's origin story in the flashbacks of Last Order? Going further back in that origin story to Alita's childhood seems like a strange choice for the next manga series. Not that I'm complaining. This volume continues a lot of Kishiro staples, like showcasing amazing mechanical designs for hilariously impractical future military hardware and dumping exposition on some pretty fascinating and esoteric sci-fi concepts.
