No, pretty sure it's talking about the overall story. This is one of those rare LN series that make me really curious about how it will all end.

Last volume I read was 17, and they were still in their 2nd year. Did they move onto the 3rd? It's been well known that the series was planned to cover all 3 years but if it's ending before that I guess it's not doing that well anymore (or a sequel is coming like forexjammer suggested).

For people who don't know, there's a rumour that the author might continue the series under a new name cause they've barely gone to highschool for the last 9-ish volumes (as in, acnes barely occure there). And yes, regarding the year spoiler[they're midway through the 3rd already]

It's called The Irregular at Magic College.  They've been hinting for a few volumes that the "series" will be coming to a close. However, there are so many open storylines that I don't see the series completing in 2 more volumes. The author may want to start a new project or take a break from this. There is still plenty of material to do more arcs. Time will tell.
