I can buy the new regime just not caring about the project or thinking it is too expensive, but considering that Guardians of the Galaxy is making a ton of money, I wouldn't think the superficial similarities would count as a negative.

This is the same thing that happened to the American remake of Battle Royal that they decided to cancel it after the Hunger Games came out.

^ I always heard that had more to do with the Virginia Tech shooting.

Anyway, I'm sure this would've been worth watching, since it was a passion project of his, but I highly doubt it would've been successful at the box office.

While true, consider the huge flop that Valerian was and how disney basically has a vicegrip on campy sci fi at the moment with most post GotG Marvel films and even Star Wars spinoffs like the upcoming Solo

This was never going to get made, of course. Valerian only made it to a movie as it was Besson, and Aja is unfortunately no Besson.

A more likely prospect for another Cobra production was the Return of Joe Gillian anime, but there’s been no news on that for quite some time, so it looks like even that’s a tenuous prospect.

It's better if this project just ceases to exist. There's no way you can pull of a decent Cobra film with the current state of Western popular entertainment under a joyless feminist stranglehold. Cobra is, essentially, a male power fantasy.
