Gotta admit, I'm curious about watching this and if I can get my internet to be kind, I might try and stream this. I loved watching Part IV as it aired on Toonami, so I'd be willing to give Part V a chance, although it might take a little bit of time for me to get used to it given that I need to get used to the subbed cast. But that's, of course, a personal issue.

I agree with the reviewer.

The 5th installment of Lupin the 3rd is shaping up to be a nice entry point. You can if needed get just enough background for beginners to understand the characters and have a good run of this modern take of Lupin.

I think the show however isn't going to get any lighter from here, taking its queues from part 4 and the serial nature it's going to trend more toward a serious narrative with the typically heist tropes where something somewhere will go wrong but that's the charm of the show.

My only gripe is that the intro is so catchy and the art for it is so unique that it makes me wish the entire show was animated in that fashion. I can live without it as the show is nicely animated without it. However, that change is always lingering in the back of my mind

Yet again, in spite of my efforts to convince my friends, Lupin is never as popular as he should be. It's such a shame. In this age of sequels never made and stories never fulfilled, we can always count on Lupin to bring a smile to our face every year or two.

It's a bit of a shame the budget was shafted for Megalobox, but understandable given how intensive that show is.

Damn, TMS is KILLING it this season.

I feel you dude. Despite its popularity literally everywhere else, Lupin just doesn’t seem to get the attention it absolutely deserves in the US. Like, you need look no further than it’s depressingly small members on sites like MAL. Like, this is one of anime’s greatest franchises and something as obscure in the west as the new Gegege reboot gets more attention? Not that that show isn’t pretty great in its own right, but it still makes me a sour grape thinking about it. Luckily, at least my own circle of friends had the willingness to watch the new series with me (and they’re all digging it, as expected).

Also, I agree that TMS is KILLING it this season, but I don’t think Lupin got shafted at all. In fact, I honestly think the animation itself is marginally better/more consistent than Megalo Box. Either way both are easily some of the best looking shows of the season so it really is just splitting hairs. Plus, Lupin is twice as long as MB so if that IS the case it probably won’t be after the halfway point.

And regarding the review itself: these aren’t Takeshi Koike’s designs at all, and neither were part 4’s. Not sure how anyone would think that given they’re quite different (aside from maybe Fujiko). Confused Plus, I feel like it’s obvious that they’re going to go back to france eventually. This is a series that never stays in one place for too long, Italian Adventure included as they left Italy every once in a while.

Well that was a short-lived series. See you in part 6 everyone!

Jokes aside, episode 4 was yet another stellar episode in what is already shaping up to be one of the best Lupin series to date. I love me a good pops episode and this definitely gave Zenigata the proper introduction he deserved. The dialogue continues to be super sharp and the characters are totally on-point. Amino particular is really coming into her own as an interesting character, which makes me miss Rebecca a little less (though I’d still love to see her show up at some point). Only slight bummer was not enough Fujiko, but I’m sure we’ll get more of her very soon. I really dig the angle they’re going with between her and Lupin’s relationship in this series too, and how they’re basically stone-cold exes. This Lupin doesn’t seem like he’ll be jumping out of his clothes for her anytime soon, which is a pretty mature approach to their relationship. That cliffhanger though. How are they gonna explain this one? Even pops doesn’t buy it for a second in the episode preview, lol.

I'm really loving the serialized format, but part of me is hoping we still get some standalone heist episodes as well. And more Fujiko.

Well my theory is that spoiler[the shot came from Fujiko (or Jigen - I think Fujiko is controlling the drone, while Jigen is on rifle, but the shot seems to have come from above, where the drone is, so I dunno) or possibly set off by Lupin himself. In any case, it's a squib, foreshadowed by Fujiko's prompt to him to not "bother reaching for whatever you've got in your hairpiece." His later tossing a smoke granade was a red herring to make us think that's all he had up his hair. She also knew Zenigata was coming, counting it down for Lupin to await his arrival. They may be ex's but they know each other like the back of their hand.

I also can't think of any good reason that Lupin or Jigen would have not shot down the damn drone by now, except that he needs the world to be watching him die. I'm not buying that it's kept out of range, especially not when we see it practically hovering on top of him.]

spoiler[I keep thinking Fujiko arranged this so she'd win the pool, but surely Drone Fighter bet on that. Which makes me wonder if she's been Drone Fighter all along, but that doesn't seem right since I think she saw its footage on the net. Maybe she took him/them out during the time it lost track of the gang in the desert, but that still wouldn't get her the money if it wasn't her all along.] So my theory still has some holes, but we'll see how much I got right. Smile

spoiler[Yeah, it was pretty clear that Lupin's "death" was already planned well in advance by himself, Fujiko, and the others (not including Zenigata), so that he can move around easier and take out the people behind the Lupin Game so he can return to doing heists.]

They were very unsubtle about what was going on whenspoiler[ the shooter was very obviously Jigen]. And the next episode preview basically confirmed it. I mean, it's still a good plan and I look forward to seeing how it pays off, but they could not have telegraphed it more if they tried.

Ami is super precious, though, so it was worth it.

"This is the first moment that the show feels a little dated in its approach to technology. It's hard to imagine anyone that anyone who uses the Internet in 2018 sees it as a place "where gender, age and race don't matter"; social media and casual geotracking have permanently transformed the internet's capacity for anonymity."

I think this is slightly missing the point. Which I interpreted as the internet's ability to give anyone anonymity online. Obviously if you're doing what Lupin did and outing all your personal information, physical and abstract, it's a lot different. I also don't think the show undermines its twists. I mean, Fujiko will be back in play soon, and the previous two episodes ran straight with their developments.

I didn't even piece together that spoiler[the shooter was likely Jigen,] though that makes total sense. I mean, we all know Lupin isn't actually dead so that being the plan makes perfect sense to me. It's always fun seeing how he gets out of these predicaments.

On the topic of Zenigato's moping: spoiler[His bond with Lupin has always been so deep that he would know if he were dead or not, so my take is that he saw Lupin get killed and was either in denial or hadn't quite worked out yet how Lupin pulled off surviving. After all he did say, he wouldn't believe Lupin was dead till he saw the body.]

As for the rest of the season, I'm hoping the next arc will actually be Part III, then hopefully we also get a Part II and then a Part I arc. Possibly even a Woman named Fujiko ime may even fit if we do five episodes per arc, though I wasn't really a fan of that series as much.

I don't see Ami being a new character or member of the Lupin gang anymore than Rebecca was. Both Rebecca and Ami are more like the damsel in distress that we would see in the movies/OAVs or specials, and frankly I am fine with that.

Yeah, the preview for the next episode threw me off so bad, I wasn't expecting it. It really looks exactly like Part III. I hope they do an homage to Part I and II, as well.

Well this has definitely been the best overarching narrative in the main Lupin Parts imo.

I really hope they keep this up, and the next episode preview has me pumped for a throwback to Part 3. I really hope they also do throwbacks to parts 1 & 2 especially since they'll all be set in France, and it'll be interesting to see it in different eras.

I'm guessing Ami's past will be a big part of the final arc of this part, and maybe it'll touch on taking down a child porn ring since this part is focused on the issues with technology and, more specifically, the internet.

I was slightly disappointed with the ending, as I was hoping Ami would join Lupin's rag-tag bunch (for a thief he is sorely lacking in the modern tech department), but hopefully she will show up again. Watching this, though, makes me want to search through and find my copy of The Castle of Cagliostro

I think it's pretty obvious that Ami will return. The show was billed with a high-tech focus in general and we haven't even met the mysterious "villain" character from the key art yet. But we did catch a glimpse of him on Fujiko's tablet at the beginning of this episode, which seemed like some pretty clear foreshadowing for his part in the series. I have a strong feeling his story will connect back to Ami in a strong way as well.

The next episode, while it looks like a totally awesome throwback to Lupin's past (and arguably the most obscure part of it, no less) with its cartoony style and retro attire, I highly doubt will be the beginning of a full-on new serialized arc. I'm more inclined to believe that it's going to be a one-off standalone (maybe even non-canon) episode and the episode after THAT will be the start of a new storyline proper, reverting back to the modern designs. And maybe they'll do a throwback episode like that (with a different era as an inspiration each time) after each major arc as a way to alleviate the drama and still give fans the classic episodic heists/adventures that the series is known for. If that's the case, a healthy mix of mini-arcs and standalone episodes, I'll be very pleased. But honestly who knows at this point, I have no clue where its going. And honestly that's part of what I love about this series so far. It's constantly throwing its viewers threw a loop while always maintaining consistent high quality. Can't wait for the next episode and to see where its heading from here!
