Do you think so too? I am glad that it's being distributed domestically in the US. The price is good to. I think of it as the "Heavy Metal" of Japanese manga.
A thought crossed my mind also that it could be the source material for a "Robot Carnival II"! That is, any stories that has a robot in it or other mechanical being. In case you don't know what Robot Carnival is. Uh, right, sorry. Why I think it's excellent. 
First thing that caught my eye while quickly thumbing through vol. 3, there's demon twins and one of them is getting his (her?) tail chopped off. 
My coxis tingled in sympathy for the poor devil. What do I see next? Yoshitoshi Abe's bloody, bloody tale (nothing like Haibane Renmei) of monsters and dungeons. Ugh, I'm getting queasy. 
But then, there's a tale of a little girl and a professor who wants to switch bodies with her. Nice. Relaxing. Atmospheric. 
Later on I went through the stories more slowly and since it's vol 3 I went and ordered the first two to catch up. Robot is an explosion of color that I don't mind in the usually black and white Japanese world of manga. These examples of deluxe Japanese manga art are full of detail and power. It's like a painting from a famous artist in a museum. Having the opportunity to see more of Yoshitoshi Abe's artwork is a big plus for me too. hile it is organized by Range Murata and he does the coverart and ONE story in it, it contains stories by numerous authors (including Yoshitoshi ABe).

Can you think of a better word? Like one blogger said, it either this or whatever Seven Seas is publishing that's going to help manga get on the evening news. Creepyness aside, it's a solid anthology. The fact that most of these artists have animation backgrounds shows as many stories are examples of poor writing or style-over-substance, but the good stories in the volumes usually make up for it. The main appeal is obviously the artwork, which is worth the purchase alone |

 Well, Murata's art is very good. And it does get the imagination going. But for the most part is clean. The covers are n-i-c-e. I wouldn't mind some posters of THAT. 
Hm, should we be slapping the "lolita" label to any art involving female characters? It might unnecessarily confuse and give a bad impression to other people. |

Robot Carnival is certianly a forgotten gem that's a bit more narrative-oriented and even artsy than the stories in Robot. If you can fine a used VHS definitally pick it up.
But how is it not lolita? It's young, seemingly prepubescent girls in very suggestive and often downright sexual poses. It certianly isn't lolicon, but there is a strong lolita element running through much of the artwork. |

Pretty much the initial reason why I looked into it. I'll admit to being a fanatic of ABe's art and whatever anime he is involved in. Can't really add on much to what's already been said other than Robot is just a very pretty release. DMP's stateside certainly gives justice to art quality, and I look forward to their hopefully future art book releases since both Robot and their Lain art books are wonderful.
If my memory is right, Super Techno Arts has plans to eventually release it on DVD, though its been on hiatus for a few years. There's already a VHS release of it as Kagemusha pointed out (and HitokiriShadow linked to), though I believe there's only an English dubbed version of that available. However, should you be interested in other short anime collections, Memories and Neo Tokyo are two incredibly solid releases, with Magnetic Rose from the former and The Order to Stop Construction from the latter making both worthwhile.
Somebody is going to have a hard time convincing me that there isn't sexual intent in that hamster story. |

I finally received ROBOT 1 & 2 and it's, YUM, delicious! Damn that Range Murata fellow and his impossibly sexy girls!! They're not doing anything sexual, but, to quote Francis Ray Ottoman, they make my pants crazy.
