I am currently considering picking up the first Phoenix, Buddha, or just Ode to Kirihito. I'm leaning towards OtK, just because it's self contained within one volume, but please let me know what you think of these works if you've read them. Thank you.

Definitely check out Ode To Kirihito, you get a lot of bang for your buck, an awesome narrative and it has excellent packaging you will be proud to display on your bookcase.
You can find the beautiful Buddha hardcovers for a very reasonable price on Amazon.com. And unlike the paperback volumes, which we will continue to release through '07, you can have the hardcover series it's entirety now! But let's keep that our little secret.

All of them are great, but I usually recommend Phoenix volume 2 (which is a self-contained story). It has all the humanist themes that Tezuka is famous for, but the insanely epic and ambitious nature of the narrative tends to be a great introduction to what the man is capable of. Volume 4 of the same series is also an exellent introduction, as it's the best thing I've ever read from him. In anycase, all three are exellent.

All three are really good. You will definitely take something away from reading Buddha or phoenix. I just got Ode to Kirihito for like 10 bux today, and can't wait to read it.
Tezuka need more reconigtion for his great work here on this forum. Also, i heard that Apollo's Song (tezuka, release by vertical) is gonna be due out next June (2007).

You might be on to something there... Everyone (myself included) asked for more Vertical manga and we're about to seriously deliver. We'll have 5 new series, including 2 from Tezuka, in 2007.

So that's two we don't know about (I'm assuming one of them is To Terra)? Any hints on what they are (time period, genre)? But great to hear about the new stuff. Maybe this will ispire companies like Viz to start publishing classics once again, or at least reprint stuff like "A, A Prime" or "Blackjack."

One of the Tezuka titles is even darker than Ode to Kirihito. We have another Takemiya title in the works, and something entirely different based on one of our titles.
Since a lot of people have asked about it, I'll briefly mention our position on Dororo. We are concerned about delivering an incomplete series to a consumer that expects a finished narrative. Phoenix has self-constained stories per volume despite being an unfinished series. That said I wouldn't rule out the possibility of Vertical releasing it in the future, especially if we see a demand.

Ode To Kirihito is awesome and it's good to start with since it is just one volume. I really like the Phoenix GNs and you can pretty much read the books in any order (I think there is only 1 set of 2 parters) and not worry about losing anything. They are good stand alones.
If you have the cash, the Buddha harcovers are really nice but getting harder to find.

Eddie: Dororo was technically "finished" in the Blood Will Tell game.
And I can vouch that the people who played it would love to see more of it. Just change the title to that of the SEGA game, and you'll expand your sales.

What, all ten of them? I really doubt that's going to be the crossover hit in Tezuka's library.

I really love Buddha-I'm on volume 4 now, and it's really good. I really want to check out Black Jack, Ode to Kirihito, and Phoenix as well. I read a sample chapter of Phoeniz awhile ago, and I really liked it.

I just love Phoenix - it's a must have manga with pretty much everything I love - fighting that's not boring; romance that doesn't make you gag, Humour that isn't stupid, drama, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, History, Religion, Philosophy etc...
Buddha is almost a good, though it's not quite as epic as Phoenix. But, with Buddha, you get more time with the characters. They are born, they grow up, they die. Some of them even live long enough to get old!
I'm getting Ode to Kirihito and Adolf for Christmas, so I can't comment on them, but DO check out Astro Boy. I have been buring through the Darkhorse volumes like mad. The quality of the stories are inconsistant, and it is written for a much younger audience, but if you can look beyond that, you'll find some classic Tezuka. Best of all, I managed to find pretty much all the volumes for $5 Canadian. Sweet.

I don't see why it couldn't make money. After all, people think anime and manga adaptations of cult games like Star Ocean and Disgaea would make money.

Key word here is cult. Those two games actually sell well and have a good deal of cross-over success with anime fans even before their adaptations were released here. Blood Will Tell didn't sell that well and didn't have a strong resonance with the people who did buy it as far as I can tell.

They sell ok as niche titles.

I've only heard the games mentioned in a few circles among anime fans, compared to Final Fantasy, or even Dragon Quest. Star Ocean gets slightly more mention than Disgaea, but Suikoden-or even Lunar or Grandia-easily trumps it in popularity.

It sold better than Astro Boy, considering it had less advertising, and was a less kid-friendly title. I saw the latter rotting on the shelf and discounted within a month or so. Dororo took at least half a year to be given a reduced price, and that was after you couldn't even find it on the shelf anymore.

What are you talking about? It had positive reviews all around.
