PlayStation has used almost that exact layout since 1997, so it's hardly something weird. The real issue is that it looks impossible to hold comfortably.

I have the PS4 version and it's actually pretty comfortable! It takes a little bit to get used to (I keep picking it up the wrong way round because I'm not paying enough attention), and the buttons aren't as reactive as on a normal remote (So I can't play, say, Monster Hunter World with it because the buttons won't always work in time), so I wouldn't suggest playing something like Smash with it, but it's fine for slower paced stuff like turn based RPGs etc.

The only other thing is that the D-pad has a rough texture on it that I believe is different to a standard controller which, again, takes a bit of getting used to.
