I've always found the way that Asano portrays women (and attitudes towards women) to be a bit paradoxical: in many ways, his most sympathetic protagonists are the young women from Dead Dead Demon's DeDeDeDeDestruction, yet that same title largely relies much more heavily on stereotypical "anime girl" character types than most of his other, more "realistically-grounded" works. I guess you could say that his portrayals of everybody become much more negative the more realistically he tries to write his characters, though.

I saw the link to the other site and was a little interested in that situation when i saw this little gem of a quote in there.

"Suzan Tisdale files an ethics complaint against Courtney Milan. The meat of the complaint arose out of events on August 25th-26th when Milan, among others, criticized Tisdale on Twitter for keeping Sue Grimshaw on staff at her publishing company as an editor in spite of Grimshaw’s history of being, well, racist and problematic, and also a Trump supporter."

I know nothing about these people and whether or not they are racist or cause problems but how dare they have a different opinion than me politically!

Made me chuckle a bit. Politics has always been a giant cesspool but its just getting worse and worse as things go on. Sad thing is people dont see both sides are just clowns and it doesnt matter who has the biggest shoes its all a circus in the end.

I find the comparison a bit strenuous at best, to be honest. The RWA thing wasn't about a creator interacting with their fans like in Downfall, it was pure infighting within a group of authors and board members taking turns throwing each other under the bus and eating their own over politics. Sure, they used Twitter to signal boost and lead outrage mobs against people, but Kaoru's interaction with the platform was entirely different and mostly a positive one. Kaoru responded to all the well-wishers and in the end it was meeting a super fan of his at a signing that, presumably, helps him find himself. The ending is kind of abrupt so it's hard to say, but it seemed to have touched him emotionally.

I find Kaoru to be an overall unpleasant person, though. His resentment and jealousy for other creators, especially the one his ex-wife was busy managing are just his own insecurities, bitterness, and projection. He reminds me a lot of people like Yamakan and other jaded, older creators who like to dog on modern series while treating themselves as God's gift to the industry and anyone who doesn't understand their genius are idiots and that's why they can't find work anymore. Or those snooty critics who laugh at the mere idea of people enjoying things they, the sole arbiters of judgement have deemed unworthy of praise. It does make me wonder if this was partly autobiographical.

I just found it funny it was stressed that they back Trump when it has literally no relation to the events that happened is all. They made it a point for no reason.

has this author written anything happy or relaxing? Feels like everything is insanely dark and gritty.

What a Wonderful World! is pretty light-hearted, and Solanin gets less sad as it goes on.

I remember Asano at TCAF and he called this manga the closest thing he's written to a documentary. I mean I like Asano's manga, but it's.... you know... yikes...
