Seriously, what the hell have they done to this franchise? The original series is one of my all-time favorites, a brilliantly-realized love story with a message of acceptance and hope. Everything since has sounded like one degree or another of hot garbage, enough so to make me steer far clear of them. Even when the original creative staff returned for some of the projects, they seem to have missed the boat on why so many people loved their original creation. As this review says, just who are these movies made for?

My thoughts exactly! Like WHO want this trilogy to begin with?! Heck, who want even the second season?! The original Eureka 7 was a cool, impactful sci-fi story - of course it wasn't perfect or anything, but it was good! So what gives?!

Can only agree with the posters above. Eureka 7 was perfect as it was and didn’t need no reinventing or reimagining. Who knows who these films are targeted at? I don’t see young newer viewers interested in this.

A few months ago I went back and re-watched the original show. and I still don't get what about can be ruined. It's not bad by any means, it has high production values and an interesting setting. But the story drags on doing nothing for so long, and could easily be trimmed down to less than 40 episodes. And for a show that spends so much time on character relation they don't, except Talho and Holland, have anything compelling to show for it.

The original Eureka Seven TV series was the last great four-cour mecha anime to be produced. They no longer make mecha anime in four cours again. And yeah, despite being kinda messy, it was great.

The original Eureka Seven movie was a perplexing mess.

The sequel, Eureka Seven AO, was a 'not really bad' mess.

This new movie trilogy, I guess is... a 'kinda great and kinda bad' mess?

Anyway, being Eureka Seven, it's expected to be a mess.

They didn't so much miss the boat, so much as Tomoki Kyouda seems to actively despise that the original had an ending that emphasized love and acceptance, and so sought to create something (AO) that dashed that to pieces - and then made Hi-Evolution when people rightfully didn't like him needlessly destroying what made the original good. At this point Eureka Seven is more a product of spite than anything else.

I hate to say this and be a downer but I use to like the original Eureka Seven when it came out but the more I look back at it the less and less I like it and these movies are an example of it. It has the same effect has what the first Cars movie had with me. Also I would watch Space Dandy and Wolf's Rain more than anything than Eureka Seven seeing how they have become better original anime by Studio Bones.

How's it feel to be so wrong? lol!! I mean ... Eureka and Renton may be a young/teen romance, but it's still one of the best examples of a well-developed slow-burn romance that anime has to offer. Plus, it actually has payoff instead of just endless "will they or won't they."

I mean ... Charles and Ray ... Anemone and Dominic ... Talho and Holland ... there are so many amazing relationships and characters in E7. Sure, there's a ton of nonsense sci-fi mumbo jumbo, but the series is amazing.

I guess I'm just glad this is over and they hopefully won't drag out Eureka 7 again.

Eureka and Renton were the magic for the show. As they were the core of the show, killing Renton off was a big mistake for these later movies/shows.

I don't really want to watch Eureka suffering from tragedy porn.

Reading the review it sounds like Renton really gets the short thrift in this movie.

Hey you know what, I'll give you Charles and Ray as they were a nice couple. I don't get bringing up Tahol and Holland though, I mean I mentioned them as a positive. As for the rest, no there really isn't.

Eureka and Rentons relationship begins with them being in love, and then ends with them being in love.Which might not have been an issue if it was some subplot, but the show is mainly about them and their relationship. In 50 episodes they spend most of it telling each other how they will try their best for everybody aboard the Nirvash, what's left is typical one person gets mad at the other for some dumb reason before quickly making up. Anemone and Dominic isn't even a relationship, he has some creepy protective nature other her, and she's a b-itch and a waste of screentime.

I think there was more to it than that. Like, Renton kind of falls in love with first sight at Eureka but she doesn't fall in love with him (or realize her feelings) until later on and then it's about what their relationship means for the rest of the cast and the world at large.

Anemone and Dominic is kind of complicated.

This is selling the series so short it's not even funny. Their relationship starts out with Renton being completely infatuated by the mysterious beautiful girl who literally falls into his life (and crushes his house). Eureka is a cipher who barely acknowledges Renton's existence until she realizes he's able to unlock Nirvash's potential, and after that she only treats him as a means to that end at first. It's only as time passes that Renton starts to understand what it means to truly care about someone, and for her part Eureka has to come to terms with her burgeoning feelings, which comes to a head with what goes on with her about a quarter of the way through the series. Renton responds poorly in kind, and through a series of events both start to realize their mutual love, which culminates in what I'd easily label one of the greatest single anime episodes at the halfway point...and even then, that only gets them to the start of what one could call a true relationship! They both continue to grow from there, experience ups and downs, get upset with each other, make up, sacrifice for each other, and in the end prove that sometimes, love truly does conquer all. It's a beautiful evolution of a relationship from the most unassuming beginnings, and it still remains one of the best-realized love stories I've come across in any genre or medium.

As for Dominic and Anemone, even though they don't get nearly as much screentime, there's a lot more there too. It's true that Dominic is protective of Anemone, but it's because he knows she's a deeply-broken individual and he wants to help her if he can, even if it means putting up with her abuse. We see Anemone fall deeper and deeper into despair as she's thrust into battle again and again, and for his part Dominic receives the revelation that finally drives him to take action, culminating in a fantastic climactic moment.

So yeah, these elements may not work for you, and that's fine, but to deny their existence entirely is just being disingenuous.

And part of the issue with Ao and the movies is how it seems to go against something that was so core to the original anime and adding so much tacked on drama to it and negating the message of the original series and it's happy ending.

I've seen some people comment that it seems like Kyoda is deliberately just trying to spite the fans at this point and it kind of feels like it.
