I've written a review of GYO 1 on my blog. Check it out if you have time. Thanks!

I read the Japanese version and I mostly agree with you, about the fact that it wasn`t scary at all... however, I just wanted to point out that I don`t think that cultural factors made this scary in Japan... I don`t think your average Japanese would think this is scary. Case in point, my boyfriend (Japanese, born and raised and still living in Japan, where I am now) and I went to a used manga store. We both loved Uzumaki and thought it was really frightening. So when we saw Gyo, my BF picked it up and we started flipping through it. Half way through he said "Lame!" and put it back on the shelf. I think that, whoever read it, it was just a lame comic to begin with.

Thanks for the feedback. It reminded me of another point I was wondering about: Would someone from a culture with more proximity/exposure to sea creatures find GYO frightening? It sounds like even that wouldn't help. Perhaps GYO is just flat-out less frightening than Ito's other works.
Thanks for the comments! |
