Just watched this one at a theater tonight with my wife, aside from one other guy the entire theater was absolutely deserted. I... kind of see why this one is a pretty esoteric film and it got like no marketing that we could see. I enjoyed it well enough and it was certainly interesting, but I definitely understand it not having the draw of other animated movies. I would not take young kids to it if I'm being perfectly frank.

Really, really charming film. I can see why they brought Keiichi Suzuki on board to compose, the movie has a Mother-like mundane sense of humor and cavalier portrayal of darker topics. Even to the point of having an unexpectedly scary bit with Enma at the end. I think kids could grok with it despite the overall leisurely pace and stark grimness of the film.
I'd love to see the reference footage, the scene of Anzu going ballistic about his bike and tearing up the room made me bust up laughing.
