@Princess_Irene
Your review got me interested, but I decided to try the original novel. And I'm glad I did. I stayed up too late last night to finish volume 1, and immediately got volume 2 and preordered the 3rd.
That concern Rebecca talks about of the manga being able to hold-up under the weight of all the details of the story disappears in the novel. Everything has more room for description, but it saves it for the important things. (It doesn't have the frequent light-novel issue of a 5-page description of someone making and eating a sandwich.)
And major bonus points to a fiction book that includes a bibliography!
I haven't looked at the manga, but I highly recommend the novel(s) to any lover of folktales and/or ayakashi.
