I watched all of "Goddess of the Dark Tower (Tenshuu Monogatari)," last night, and will try do watch "Yotsuya Ghost Story (Yotsuya Kaidan)" tonight. I was trying to find the discussion thread for this show, but don't think one was ever made, so here we are. I know it's long, long past due, but this show is pretty cool. Anthology horror like this seems like a very rare thing anymore. I'm pretty excited for when I eventually watch "Goblin Cat (Bakeneko)," then Mononoke itself. Hopefully the movie trilogy for that will turn out awesome as well. Last edited by Tony K. on Fri Jul 25, 2025 2:00 pm; edited 6 times in total |

Whoa... what a koinky-dink! I've owned the three Geneon DVD volumes of this show for ages, but JUST started to watch a little them while ago. Watched the first volume and have seen the first episode of the second. Agree, a very cool show.

So I stayed up waaay past my bedtime this morning, but binged the Yotsuya Kaidan and Bakeneko stories. And holy crap, were they awesome!
The former was so tragic, and yet so vindicating. I ended up going down a rabbit hole to look up the original play and its history and had no idea it served as such in inspiration to so many other J-horror stories. The idea of a vengeful ghost has always struck me as one of the creepiest supernatural ideas. However, I'm a big believer in (extreme) retribution, so seeing the bad people get what they deserve was super satisfying. There were also some pretty eff'd up story elements spoiler[ like Yotsuya and Naosuke turning out to be half-siblings, and then Yotsuya having both men kill her.] The latter had all kinds of cool mysticism to it. I had always heard of comparisons to Mushishi, only replace the mushi with malicious spirits and make the mood straight-up horror. That being said, Bakeneko had some pretty tragic reveals about the origins of the spirit itself. I like the whole 3-step process of revealing the form, truth, and regret of a spirit. It's basically a kind of supernatural detective, but with a uniqueness that gives the mystery part so many more dimensions to comb through due to the mystical and occult nature. The way the investigating was executed for this particular story did a lot for me both, emotionally and cognitively. As a whole, even with all the horror elements, I feel there was a ton of diversity between the three stories. I added so many theme descriptors, and this is probably the most I've ever put in one show. Anyway, I'm pretty excited to jump into Mononoke, tonight |
