I've a feeling that Japan too will be another nation that will take action too late or never when it comes to such matters.
Justice doesn't understand that what you have there is a profit motive, tied to slander, hate speech, misinformation, scamming and grifting. Sometimes tied to radical fandom or not, just purely for attention, profit and power.
Seems lots of Japanese people are still not fully aware how Twitter and other social media have openly declared that they'll either be reducing efforts to combat those types of crimes, or are just directly against going after or disclosing information on people who uses these tactics for attention and money, so the situation is fully bad with no current chances of getting better.
The more time passes that governments and justice systems of nations globally don't realize how deep and bad of a problem this truly is, the worse the consequences will be, the more victims will pile up, the worse the general environment will be.
And of course, we all know how Japan has never been great to combat things like these, due to politics that is non-representative and conservative in nature. Old men disconnected from reality that only cares about maintaining the status quo trapped inside a bubble will never come up with proper solutions for most of the things that Japanese people are worried about currently.

I don't know how the rumor got spread online, but yeah after reading this, I expect more nasty rumor being spread not particular to her, but other voice actors and mainstream actors in Japan too, reading this reminds me of how South Korean celebrities and K-pop idols are facing over there too when it comes to online rumor and nastiness and the toll it has on mental health. Anybody on ANN remembered Sulli of f(X)? Time and time again, people have called on fans to please stop the online bullying/harassment and tone down the negativities towards K-pop idols. I'm afraid this could be replicated in Japan aimed at voice actors, J-pop idols/J-musicians in that same manner.

You could maybe make an argument that it's more intense and virulent in the K-pop scene, but harmful rumor-mongering about idols in Japan has been going on for decades. (See the movie Perfect Blue, which was made in the mid-'90s.)

I'm worried this type of intense and virulent behavior that is happening in K-pop scene could find it's way into the world of Japanese entertainment and celebrities because of the evolution of social media technology and Japanese netizens are probably studying K-netizens' online bullying tactics toward K-Pop idols. I know Perfect Blue since it's one of my favorite anime film from Satoshi Kon, but the difference between that movie and today is that the internet has evolved and you got social media to make the bullying, and online harassment, and online death threats much worse to the point where the idols and celebrities could end up attempting or successfully commit suicide (which has happened in the world of K-pop/K-entertainment, and to some extent, Japanese celebs too). So IMO, seeing death threats to a company like Bushiroad & a voice actress is very scary for anyone who has been a K-pop fan and has been knee-deep in the world of K-entertainment.

Yeah, people who spread lies that go viral are rewarded much more than people that use social media to responsibly share information. This extends to the businesses that get more attention and ad sales revenue from people caught up in a viral lie that upsets people than people who put effort into only sharing vetted information, that is why they do nothing to fix it.

I think it could get better eventually, but first governments world wide need to understand that it's in the business' interests to allow the most heinous and destabilizing content for clicks and that they need to be held accountable for not moderating it. This isn't about "free speech" because people should be able to say what they want, but this is about them using algorithms that actively encourage the most salacious and upsetting opinions to get the most attention which snowballs into these scenarios.

My condolences to Amane Shindo, no one should have to go through that.

This sort of thing has been happening in the JPOP/Seiyu sphere for years though.
In terms of just slander, there were attacks on Aya Hirano that almost ended her career. Love Live VA Emi Nitto got accused of being in porn and I believe it impacted her career a bit. Within Love Live, there's already been a couple of other girls that have had scandal (another one was accused of being in porn, but luckily I don't think it blew up as bad as it did for Emitsun).
And for outside of anime, there have been cases of idols being stalked and attacked.
I don't know if there's been suicides related to the harassment within the JPOP field, but a number of VAs seem to be getting diagnosed with adjustment disorder, which is probably related to the pressure from crazy fans (as well as general anxiety performing of course).

Several of these you stated I have known, and others like Emi Nitto's facing accusation of being in porn probably slipped through the crack (probably because anything Japanese entertainment related don't get the same type of mainstream coverage compared to what K-pop & K-entertainment get).

harminia, you also wrote:

About J-pop and suicide, I don't think we have anything like that recently, and the last time that happened is back in 1986 when 2 prominent J-idols committed suicide. Ever since then, I haven't heard of any high-profile suicide of J-pop idols (unless the English-language mainstream media think J-idols don't attract enough attention compared to their K-Pop counterpart). I'm aware of some high profile J-idols that have taken a break or take a leave of absence due to mental health or sometime taking inspiration from their K-pop counterpart when it comes to tackling mental health.

But about suicide in the world of idol music, there are a lot of high-profile cases of K-pop idols and musicians taking their own life, and those get a lot of attention on mainstream media in the US.

Also one more thing, I don't think you have any idea how bad sasaeng fans in K-pop world are.
