have to say spring and summer anime sucks really bad especially the selection for english dub. most selected for dubb sucked really bad and anything worth watching didn't get dubbed as usual. who ever at crunchyroll that has that job needs to be replaced. the best dubs were always dubbed when funimation was stand alone. like kingdom when the merge happened they stopped dubbing kingdom and a lot of other good anime that was in the middle of english dub. people at crunchyroll need to get their heads out of their butt and finish these great dubs that were started when funimation was stand alone. dam i really miss funimation, at least the people there knew how to do their job right

I think there maybe another factor why companies like Crunchyroll (and that extend to companies like Sentai filmworks, GKIDS, and maybe other companies that license and handled release of anime in the US) when it comes to which anime get dubbed and which doesn't, quick question: How many of you turned on Closed Caption (CC)/SDH subtitles even if English is spoken when you watched any non-anime media/stuff? Because I think I have an idea why anime companies are cutting down and being selective on which anime titles they licensed are getting dubbed, and which anime titles are getting fully subbed and this can be traced back to how many people and how large the demographic watched their stuff with CC/SDH subtitles turned on. For the last few years, people in the US have been turning on CC/subtitles for their movies and TV shows/miniseries even if the dialogue spoken on there are all in English, and the people watching them are not deaf or hard of hearing. And if you want to to know why more people even that speak and understand English fluently (and those that are not deaf or even hard of hearing) are doing that, these video like this one and this one will fully explain the whole thing (make sure to turn on the CC for both of the video I just linked), and you're probably thinking: what does this have to do with Crunchyroll (and other companies) and the way they decide which anime titles get fully dubbed, and which one don't get dubbed at all? Because of the way people are now turning on CC/subtitles even for English-speaking films and TV shows, it means if you're watching English dialogue/speaking programs with CC/subtitles turned on full time and you're becoming used to watching stuff with them turned on, it will make the person or you less scared of watching live-action foreign films and TV shows/dramas/limited series with ease even if the foreign-language media that don't have any English dub (ie: that's the case of Korean TV dramas, or any live-action East Asian TV dramas/miniseries), and this does extend to anime (and animation where English is not the original language, or the animation doesn't have English dub audio track). People who are used to watching CC/SDH subtitle turned on will more likely be more comfortable watching foreign-language program because they're used to watching all their program with CC/SDH turned on, turning on CC/subtitle has become 2nd nature to that person. So it's easy for someone who watched English-spoken program with the CC/SDH subtitles turned on are going to find watching foreign-language programs way easier because of that. So in the mind of Crunchyroll, and other companies that licensed and handle the translation in the US, I think they're becoming aware of this. So that leads to them deciding which anime they picked up/licensed that don't need dub because as you know the cost of dubbing has been going up, so companies can't afford to dub every anime titles they license (even the one that are lesser well-known or very niche, unless the Japanese licensor provide the money for dubbing that anime title), but nowaday because people are watching their foreign-language programs with subtitles and those live-action foreign language programs that don't have English dub can still be watched with subtitles and if people have no problem watching those live-action foreign-language programs on Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, etc... with their subtitles turned on because they became accustomed to watching their English-language programs with the CC/SDH subtitles turned on, so that would give CR and other anime companies to not dub certain anime titles they picked up. I don't know why the rest of Kingdom don't get dubbed in English, either it could be because of Funimation merger with Crunchyroll causing that disruption, or the cost of dubbing Kingdom may have been too high hence switching to subtitles only. But I'll say this: because of the way more people are now turning on CC/SDH subtitles for their English-speaking programs they watched, they have become accustomed to watching anything with subtitles turned on. That makes it easier for people to transitioned/crossover/watching foreign-language programs if that said programs don't have English dub included and that does extend to anime too. It's inevitable that more anime titles (the one that are obscure or niche titles) may get subtitled release rather then getting a dub because of the high cost of dubbing (although mainstream anime titles will always received dub no matter what). That's why an obscure anime title(s) will probably not get a dub (unless the Japanese licensors are willing to pay have that particular anime titles to get a dub). Even Japanese licensors are probably aware of this too, so they may justify letting that obscure anime titles get a sub-only release rather then dub not to only save money, but because they know that people in the US are turning on CC/SDH subtitles even for programs where English is the spoken dialogue, and leading to these same people being able to watched foreign-language films/TV shows with ease and with comfort. I hope maybe this insight will help get a better understanding. |
