Well, if I'm not wrong this is Famitsu's last weekly sales report of the year, and it's quite interesting. First of all, in terms of hardware sales the Switch 2 sold 221,033 units, the original Switch family of systems sold 38,184 units and the PS5 family of systems sold 19,307 units, at this point, I don't know what could Sony do to boost the PS5 sales in Japan, and even then this week's entire Top 30 is composed of Switch and Switch 2 games.
Next year it's going to be interesting, some big titles are coming to the Switch, I don't have that high expectations with Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade's Switch 2 port, though I do believe there's a possibility that it might sell better than the PS5 version, which sold 20,889, but it's not going to be the huge hit that some people are imagining, it's a port of a six-year old game after all. I'm more interested to see how Resident Evil Requiem is going to perform, since its releaseing on both the Switch 2 and PS5 at the same time.

Glad to see Olympia Soirée Catharsis made it on here! Though I suppose that shouldn't be a surprise, I believe it was pretty popular in Japan.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with those thoughts. Along with RE:R numbers I'm interested in Rhythm Heaven and Tomodachi Life numbers.

The PS5 is in a weird place in Japan. The only reason I can come up with is that it's more marketed towards western culture gaming designed for a power user (in a console sense) while the Switch(2) is marketed towards everyone or even as a second system.

I think gaming companies are facing a bit of a problem regardless of systems. I predicted sales for the Switch 2 were frontloaded despite the hype at record numbers sold initially and lo and behold that was the case. Beaten by the Playstation outside of Japan is not what Nintendo hoped for clearly (it may do better in Japan, but thats not a barometer for long term success). But I don't think its the competition that matters, not really anyways. Its the games! The gaming industry as a whole is facing a slump because the investment needed for large titles (especially the time for development) is not going to work in marketing consoles. Why buy any of these consoles for a game that takes 6 years to develop? Its why these companies want to make games more expensive - which the market is seemingly rejecting.

I agree that the FF7 remake is not likely to sell large numbers - it was always a bad plan to remake a game that most modern gamers have never played and expect it to sell huge numbers. The magic of FF7 was felt because at the time it was something we hadn't seen before. We live in a different world now. Don't get me wrong - i love rpg remakes. Im exactly the audience for this, but i know this isnt going to sell gangbusters. I dont even think Requiem will be a huge hit on either console. I should be more excited, but the marketing of this game makes me bored. I think Leon's entire inclusion in this game is a huge red flag. They know they need nostalgia in here to sell it. If i had to guess, you will see sales on that game very quickly after release.

I think we are entering the world of less interest in these big budget titles and more interest in lower budget indy games. And that creates chaos because nobody can truly predict the next big hit. A very difficult time for consoles because they live and die on what games they can offer consumers.
