Yep, that sounds like what I experienced of the manga before I dropped it with frustration at myself for wasting what time I did on it. LitRPG can be cool, even goofy in a good way, but Hell Mode truly feels like everything to hate about it within the Narō sphere, mercifully sans a bland man wholly focused on raising himself up, and tasteless inclusions of slavery. (I consider its bog standard, uninteresting girls not so bad as go one way or the other there.) It honestly sounds like a game world that could theoretically be fun to play, but that doesn't make it well written, interesting, or even fun to follow — were it more for me all else equal, it'd still be stultifyingly dull.

One of the biggest cons to my memory, is how much it feels like a Let's Play rather than a narrative to follow (and I like LPs). Total bore.

I didn't hate it, but perhaps that is a false memory. I remember the move to the nobles house and the adversary stuff and finally the move to the academy actually giving it some much needed action and motivation. I do think the stats stuff was far to over drawn, but I did like some of the earlier discussion on mitigating unfair fights for the underleveled.

I completely agree that Allen is lacking in personality. He is just a cool level headed guy. IE he is the viewer who has already thought long about min maxing the situation. But that does not lead to personal conflict. Like at all, the most conflict Allen faces is demands on his time.

I put the novels down I think near the middle of volume 4. When the whole shonen infinite spiral was going off raising the threats they faced to rediculous levels. It was entirely a power fantasy with its central and only gimmick being grinding is Allens power. He doesnt get it for free but he is OP and he earns that through grinding which is largely tedious.

But I have read far worse written light novels so I was generally okay with the series even if I didn't want anymore of it. A few of its action set pieces particularly the end of the noble house arc offered real entertainment. And volumes 1's first monster fight genuinely felt like quite a good example of a underpowered combat.
