I’m sad that this series didn’t become bigger in America (too niche of a subject, I guess) but I felt it was truly special and unique.

Like I said in a different thread, if you want more 'unpredictable' samurai action, check out The Magnificent Bastard Keiji from Kodansha.

I really liked Season 1 of the anime and considered reading this

BUT

can any manga readers tell me if the series still remains good and if the ending is satisfying or not? (without spoilers)

IMO it's harder to digest in manga form. But yeah, the quality is solid and the ending is relatively satisfying.

Yes, it's very good, but I would really recommend it if you're a fan of the author's previous works (Neuro and Assassination Classroom), mainly because of its narrative style and humor. There's also a lot of historical information that, although not really difficult to follow, can be a bit overwhelming if you try to read it all in one go. I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece, but it's quite solid and consistent from start to finish.

Have never really loved Matsui's work because his handling of tone and general sense of humor aren't my thing, but will have to admit that the manga's last joke is pretty good
