Man, between this and the Yakuza 3 remake being completely bungled, sure is rough for anyone who enjoys these kinds of sandbox brawlers/action RPGs. Netease in particular has been withdrawing from investing in international developers lately.

Kiwami 3 is great despite what the vocal minority claims.

This sucks but they’ve been working on the game for 4 years with nothing to show for it and they ask for another $44 Million to finish it? Can’t say I blame NetEase for saying no.

That's a little bit of a bummer, but given the uncertain times we're living in, scaling back on international development teams is the 'default' option a company goes to in order to 'weather the storm' as it were.

Sad to hear Nagoshi's having trouble with his own new not!Yakuza game but perhaps he's trying to aim too big for his britches here. 44 million is not a small amount. It also kind of raises the question why he left Yakuza to make... another Yakuza. Usually creators leave studios and series because they want to do something different and feel pigeonholed.

From what I understand Sega wanted to promote Nagoshi into a corporate role but he wanted to keep making games so he left.

I've been hearing the claim that Nagoshi was meant to become SEGA's new CEO, but I don't think it's actually true, I've been hearing that he was actually demoted after the failures of Valkyria Chronicles 4 and the Sakura Wars revivial, especially the latter one considering how much SEGA invested in the revivial only to sold around 300k copies in Japan (the original Sakura Wars used to sell almost 500k back on the Saturn) and the cancellation of various Sakura Wars mobile game spin-offs.

There was also an incident that may have been a sore spot, but back during a Puyo Puyo event years ago, Nagoshi was invited to commentate, even though he had ZERO involvement in that game series. In an offhanded comment, he described the competitors for 'seeming like the kind of people who eat cheese gyudon (beef and rice bowl).' This was an offhanded way to describe them as 'cheegyu', a slang for uncouth, socially awkward people (often male), derived from a misconception that such people order cheese on this cheap comfort dish.

The moment in that VOD was later redacted, and some time later, both he and the host were made to 'apologize', without much context, but again, could just be a coincidence.

With $44 million estimated still to go (and it could surely end up being much more) you have to wonder just how much is already done and spent and how much is left to go.

Takes more than a vocal minority to get mixed reviews on Steam.

If it is estimated to need $44 million to finish, then it probably isn't that close to finished. I'm sure a decent amount of the time from Nagoshi leaving was setting up the new studio, so not all of that time was active development. But, the timing is also coming from when companies were spending a lot, including funding new studios, on some sort of belief that the COVID boom would not stop. Netease now rethinking what it started here is in line with the trends of late.

Showing trailers way too soon isn't unusual in the game industry, but that TGA spot has me wondering if it was meant to get it in front of potential new publishers and have any hype behind it as a push to get someone to take it off their hands.

Oh, user reviews matter now? Last I heard they were useless metrics and just angry gamers who could be easily ignored since review bombing is bad. Anyway, Yakuza 3 is a objectively financial and critical success. Objectively. There's never been a better time of being a fan of these kinds of games. Nagoshi's failings have no baring on that despite what OP says.

Don't know why you're acting like I personally said something contradictory just because others have said otherwise. Frankly tells me all I need to know about you, you won't argue in good faith. Financial success in an already successful series is a no shit moment, and speaks nothing of quality. As for critical success I'll throw your own Goomba fallacy back at you and say, I thought we were meant to ignore all the game journos for being paid shills and whatnot.

Sorry for necroposting, but apparently Nagoshi Studio official YouTube channel has been deleted and I've hearing some rumors that uploads of Gang of Dragons's trailer in other channels have been deleted as well. Now it seems the game might have been canceled for sure.

I mean writing was on the wall when they mentioned the game had it’s funding cut and Nagoshi was still looking for funding.
