Okay I’ve been seeing a few anime centred around smoking. Is this a new trend in Japan or something?

Smoking wouldn't be a new trend there. What other animes have you seen lately centered around it?

There was at least one other but I don’t recall the name. I know smoking isn’t new to Japan but it’s weird how it seems to have suddenly become a central element of more than one anime.

Based on Wikipedia this series has been running since 2023 and has 11 volumes. It's just getting an anime adaptation now. Not sure what other series you're referring to, but two in at minimum three years isn't that crazy.

Off the top of my head, there's also Kowloon Generic Romance, which I wouldn't say is about smoking but the author definitely has a fetish; Yuuki Rey's Sake to Tobacco no Hiyatoi Dungeon, which hasn't gotten an anime, but the manga ran for about a year; and Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You has an anime set to premiere in July.
I wouldn't say it's a "new trend", but smoking is definitely still more common in Japan than it is in the USA.

For what it’s worth, the US has one of the more extensive anti-smoking campaigns in the world. I’m not here to judge anyone for smoking, but we have restrictions, both written in law (limitations on where ads can be placed) and in general agreements with media. Marvel Comics, up to a few years ago, refused to show its characters smoking because a senior editor had a father who died from lung cancer.
The cultural taboo on showing it is much stronger here, where any kind of smoking in comedy is often used to show a character as out of touch, with lots of coughing.
