... Shit! When I read the plot summary I remembered an explicit reference to this in Golden Kamuy at the end (you know, despite a lot of the premise being clearly inspired by it). SPOILERS OF THE END OF THE MANGA In the epilogue, the unlucky-lucky dude and the ainu hunter of the same band go to America and make a movie that's pretty much that. I thought back then it was just some throwaway joke about them doing a movie that is almost the same thing as Golden Kamuy's plot, but no, it's the author again having fun plus homaging his influences. Beautiful.

This film is what happens if you loosely adapt a whole series at once instead of picking a story to tell. 80s and early 90s Madhouse productions tended to struggle with pacing as they refused to tell half a story or less and failed to find the funding for more. Style - The Movie and little else. Dagger of Kamui could work as a 24-episode anime but you would need to beef up the characterizations and settle on a tone.
I can´t imagine how little the already incomprehensible plot would make sense if an additional 40 minutes were missing but that US VHS is thankfully lost to time.
