So. this isn't exactly one of those situations where I went charging at the football to kick it all Charlie Brown like and then the anime (Lucy) pulled it out from me at the last minute.
I tried the anime because I try most anime except the ones I have less than zero - as in negative - interest in. But, I didn't look forward to it because this seems set to be a play by play rehash of other anime, most notably The Strongest Sage With the Weakest Crest but not limited to that. And most of the anime in this sub-genre tend to be mediocre in my opinion. This one had more storytelling chops than I was expecting - not the production values, but in making the protagonist seem more human than trope. That said, I still had a hard time mustering up the empathy that the anime was trying to generate. It's kind of like that recent anime Haibara's Teenage new Game +. where the main character seemed to have a decent life and was just mopey because he didn't have a perfect one, and then BAM! Time traveling reset. I only watched the first few episodes, so I can't comment on how it evolved from there. Here, the main character is agonizing because in spite of his hard work, he was only the 4th strongest mage in the empire. He was recognized for his accomplishments, got a title whose perks are a bit vague, but he doesn't seem to be hurting for money or respect. As an old man, he's the headmaster of a school and training the next generation of magicians. This doesn't exactly seem like the stuff of which Greek tragedies are made. Honestly, it feels like the dude needs a little therapy and some good friends more than a magic wish. But, it turns out this is a double bluff isekai and our boy has a golden ticket. Now he's a - am I wrong or is he a four year old? I think he's a four year old. Anyway, he's a young child with an adult mind and the magical might of the 4th strongest mage in the empire. I think people who like that sort of set-up ought to give this a try. |

The premise has me feeling a tad mixed. Wanting to be the very best in your field of study/work makes perfect sense. Working together with three much more gifted magicians is bound to sting due to that. That said, he became one of the most lauded magicians of his generation through sheer will and effort. Given how he dies you would think that he never made it out of magic school or had no magic at all.
It makes for a weird message in that life is only worthwhile if you achieve your dream in a perfect manner, anything less and you should do it over. Haibara indeed had the same kind of start and it felt just as awkward there. |

As of the first episode it is confusing that we are supposed to feel bad for this guy or something. He managed to get to the top 4, but he is upset that he found out that he had no aptitude. Shouldn't that actually be impressive that he didn't have it on easy mode and he made it so far? I would think it be brag worthy that he made it to the top with a handicap. He sounded like he was having a tantrum.
Having him reincarnate and like accidentally use powerful magic, that just seems super boring. |

Welp, there goes pops. I was expecting him to be a semi long term obstacle for Ephtal but that was clearly not the case. His army got annihilated without mercy and he was then off to the gallows for his public execution. I am glad that the mc seems to have a better attitude now and is interested in growing stronger and learning instead of moping around. |
