Red River (TV) Source: Manga (completed @ 28 volumes by Chie Shinohara) Demographic: Shoujo Animation Studio: Tatsunoko Production Genres: action, adventure, drama, romance, supernatural Themes: aristocracy, conspiracy, goddesses, historical, isekai, medieval, Middle East, royalty, sorcery, time travel Plot Summary: One day while walking home, Yuuri Suzuki is magically pulled through a puddle of water and finds herself in the past, or more precisely 1500 B.C. Location: The Hittite Empire, Anatolia. There the queen was to use her as a sacrifice, but she was saved by the queen’s stepson, who is also a heir to the throne. Now she must try to stay alive and get back to her time while hopefully not altering the future. Air Date & Platform: July 07, 2026 (Tuesday) Available on: Crunchyroll Episode Count / Runtime: Pending Trailer ---------------------------------- Heard good things about this old-school isekai. The trailer gave me Fushigi Yuugi vibes, but set in Egypt, instead of China. Will definitely give it a shot. |

1: Rather rough arrival to bronze age, but I guess that's to be expected, and things went better than they could have. This is old-school shoujo all right, she landed directly in the middle of apparently several pretty princes and court scheming. The setting is unique, not every anime is located in the Hittite empire, and it's already raising my expectations. From the ED it looks like there will be some adventure to be had, hoping it will be a good one.
The "Httitte language" they speak in the first minutes turned out to be Japanese, played backwards... |

I really want to like this. An anime set in the Hittite empire is just such a cool concept.
Unfortunately, the production value is really quite poor, lots of static shots here. Theres also writing problems. The Hittite prince is in line with certain problematic shojou tropes- but in the context of being a Hittite prince, this actually makes him super progressive and so in context it actually works for me fine. But most of the episode is our lead character, and she's such a photocopy 90s Shojou lead that she's nearly as dull as other Isekais Kirito clones- with the exception that she can be in peril, at least. Unfortunately I didn't get much reason to care about the peril. I'll give it more time. I want this to be a winner. But it needs to deliver more than this. |

The premiere bummed me out. Having heard from friends how amazing the manga is had me rather curious (and maybe expecting a bit too much to be honest). The first episode resulted in me not wanting to see more. The lacking presentation is certainly part of that but the writing does not do it for either.

I found it kind of unengaging as well. Not bad, just blah. The bit with the evil queen happened so fast and without any garnish that I didn't really have time to feel much about it. She was basically given as much texture as Rita Repulsa in a Power Rangers episode. But my main concern is that, so far anyway, the main character mostly just reacts to everything (and in a very predictable way) though all those shots of her on a horse holding a sword up in the OP might indicate a wind change if I wait for it. I have sympathy for her, but that's not enough to power a show.
Then again, I'm probably not the intended audience. The audience might be the same sort of people (I'm assuming mostly women) who find stories about sexy vampires swooping in and taking charge of a female in peril's life throb worthy. I'm not one of those, but I do see where the prince fulfils the same function here. I watched Victoria of Many Faces on the same day, and even though the animation itself wasn't high octane, that scene with Victoria (okay, Chloe) and the abandoned child took its time, had great soft, sorrowful piano music in the background, nuanced voice acting from the lead, and even those bits where manga panel frames suddenly imposed themself over the anime gave creative emphasis though it was the sort of thing that some people will like and some people won't. I liked it. At the very least, it took a storytelling risk. This anime could use a little of that kind of TLC in the handling IMHO. |

It's because Hati are indo-europeans. They are "invaders" to the regions, like the Hurrians (Mitanni). They had lighter hair.
She is not a "photocopy", she is an "original". Yes, this is old shoujo, as long as people are aware of this fact they can have fun. I was thinking, maybe some will compare a bit with Akatsuki no Yona, because as the story progresses Yuri becomes "stronger". |

I (re) read Kare Kano last year, read Fruits Basket this year. Even happened on a volume of Kodacha recently. I only especially liked the first but I wouldn't use that description for any of the leads - that she's bland, even for the time, is a view I'm happy to stick with. The ed animation promises change on that front and I look forward to it- preferably soon! |
