So, I bought the first 3 in 1 volume of Full Metal Alchemist the other week (first printing June 2011) and was very surprised to see an ad in the back for Excel Saga. I know from browsing here and elsewhere on the internet that certain volumes of Excel Saga are OOP and thus crazy expensive now. My question is, then, why are Viz advertising a series with random volumes OOP? I'm inclined to think that Viz are just trolling people, but maybe it's a sign that they're going to reprint the series. Any thoughts?

I just checked RightStuf, the only volumes they don't have are 5, 7, and 8. And 22 just came out in April (2011), so I don't see why Viz wouldn't advertise a current series they publish. Amazon even lists 23 for April 2012 release.
Just because they're once-a-year books (with the conclusion of the series in Japan, this may increase, as Viz tends to slow down when they start getting close to catching up with the Japanese books) doesn't mean that they're not being published. |

Because they are trying to sell the volumes that are not out of print, which is most of them.
I really have no idea what you mean by that.
It certainly is possible that they will do another print run of the volumes that are out of print, if they see good sales for the other volumes. If I understand the term correctly a book is not really "out of print" unless there is some evidence that the publisher does not intend to print more. The current print run being sold out is not the same as being out of print. |
